Day 87: Waterton Lakes Park, Can to Havre, MT

Havre, Montana, United States
Our last day in Canada started with a summer rain shower. We were filling and emptying tanks and took on a little water. Then we ventured back to the Waterton Lake Park, feeling sure the skies would clear. Today we drove into the village of Waterton, which was quaint, but with an unusually large proportion of housing - cute houses, and we were told the population goes down to about 30 in the winter, but seemed like a thriving community now. We finally found a place to park, and we headed out to see another waterfall when the heavy rain dropped on us. Our hearts just were not into it, as I said, we feel like we've already seen the most gorgeous places on earth, so we got back in the RV and drove up to the Prince of Wales Lodge. I went because it looked to have a great view, but it also was a spectacular site - an old, historical, Alpine lodge still true to it's period. High Tea was being served in front of the view of Waterton Lakes by kilt clad staff, accompanied by a pianist. The lodge lobby is 3 stories tall with wrought iron chandeliers and rustic timbers, looking through high windows to the lake and mountain views. It all seemed so cozy on this chilly, rainy day! We perused the gift store then headed out - out of the park and out of the country of Canada! It was only about 10 miles to the border, but the skies were closing in on us. At the border, I managed to irritate the border guard by being in the wrong lane (I would have sheared off the top of my RV or the guard booth roof if I had proceeded), but there was a cone in the other lane like it was closed! The border guard got very snippy with me when I tried to change lanes, saying he told me to back through the narrow gates and come down the right aisle, "I can move the cone easier than the roof" he said. He's just lucky I was able to back up without taking out the whole border patrol camp, Canadian and U.S.! When I came up in the correct lane, Linda said, "we made it", very chipper, and I could feel his delight!! Anyway, he asked a few terse questions, and let us go through!! Back in the USA!!! Almost six weeks since our departure! A couple miles in, we encountered our first animals - these were cows on the side of the road - about 12 of them outside the fence, some stepping into the road! Not sure how they escaped, but I do love looking at cows! We came into Montana at Chief Mountain, and followed the tiny roads that run near Glacier National Park, down to Rt 2. I wanted to try a different route out than what we followed in, and someone had recommended the drive across northern US by Rt 2 (kind of like Rt 66 in the south). We were awed by the miles of grain fields and silos - just as much tan as we had seen of yellow canola in Canada. We were trying to make it to Havre, MT for the night - our first US Walmart (needing supplies and a place to camp for the night), but the weather was looking very threatening and the winds were gusting in unexpected directions. The last 30 minutes into Havre were a very tense drive, but it got even worse after we parked at Walmart - the RV is shaking from the wind and rain, and even Sara is very anxious. I parked on the side of the building (to have a little protection from the wind), but probably need to move into the far reaches of the lot for the night. We also need to shop, but we'll wait out this rain! We'll mainly be making time to get back to Ohio, but we are trying to include Theodore Roosevelt National Park and some of the Lewis and Clark Expedition sites into our return.
