Day 91: Sioux Falls, SD to Bevier, Missouri

Saturday, July 30, 2016
Bevier, Missouri, United States
Still just travelling, spent the night at Sam's Club and Walmart, but traffic was noisy this am so had to get moving! We drove an hour south to Sioux City, Iowa and stopped at the Farmer's Market (got some Iowa corn) and dog park (Bacon Creek Dog Park) where we had a nice picnic lunch. The weather is getting warmer, but not humid and with a nice breeze so fun to be outside in the shade - Sara thinks it's hot wherever we go now, so was not appreciating the dog park as much as before! But back on the road at 1:30 and we're halfway through Iowa when we had the scare of our lives! I see a large box truck crossing the median coming head on at traffic in my lanes, a semi in front of me in left lane, and me in right lane. I couldn't tell if the runaway truck would stop in center median or cross in front of semi truck into my lane - I was saying a few epithets as I slammed on breaks and got into left lane, as the truck went all the way across the road, flipping twice, and over the right embankment!! We then pulled back to right shoulder ahead of the wreck and Linda called 911 while I walked back to scene, fully expecting the truck to explode or to be doing a signs of life check on the body of the driver - but miraculously, he was upside down, and falling out the passenger door of his truck cab when I got there. He seemed to be OK, but said he thinks he blew a tire, and had just had a stabilizer bar installed last week (I also had one installed before this trip!) so that kind of talk made me even more worried. But I helped him out of the truck, examined his bleeding wounds, an EMT was there doing a neuro check on him, and traffic was really snarling, so we got back to the RV and continued on. Emergency services were just coming when we left, but Linda and I were both shaken - if we had been 1 minute earlier in our trip, we would have met that truck head on, or if that semi had been 1 minute earlier, he would have wiped out both of us!! Thank god for our safe trip today!! Then on to St Joseph, MO to refill at Sam's Club with gas - $1.78/gal, yeah! (9.1 mpg today). After St Joseph, we turned east - here we passed home places of Walter Cronkite, Walt Disney, General Pershing, and J.C. Penney - who knew!! Next heading toward Indianapolis, where I hope to see my best friend from high school - Linda from Germany! And then on to Columbus to drop Linda from Atlanta at her sister's place. (Next week I get to see my best friend from college...you guessed it, Lynnda from Kent!). Tonight we drove til 8:30pm to get to a full service RV park because we have the brown water issue again - need to drain and refill tanks. Seems to be a very friendly Shoemaker Campground here in Bevier, MO - lake and water slides, very friendly campers. Feeling very lucky to be safe and alive tonight, and grateful that the truck driver is also!!

Thank God for you two. That was a close call.
