Florida Bound: Atlanta to Savannah, GA

Savannah, Georgia, United States
So I've been off-line for awhile now, much has happened. Most upsetting was loss of my Dad after a long month of complications from his fall at the boat dock. So I spent most of November, December at the hospital with Dad, then waited for his Celebration of Life Ceremony on Jan 7, only to be delayed to Jan 14 due to a big ice storm in Atlanta. The RV lived at Camping World (another 8 week stay waiting on warranty work) while Dad was hospitalized, and then out to St Mountain Park again after New Year's (2017!). I'll miss having Dad as my traveling champion and monitor for safety, but know that he is traveling with me in spirit! On another front, Sara's urethral tumor turned out to be benign, and was removed via an office procedure. I couldn't have been more surprised or relieved, but she's back to herself and planted in her front seat dog bed. Also joining me on this trip is Becky, a long time friend from Emory. She is on her first RV trip after a short orientation of her duties by Linda. Becky is along for the first week down the Atlantic coast of Florida, and will fly home from Miami, where I will pick up Karen. Becky is learning the "RV lingo" and spent time on the phone trying to get some advance reservations - she threw out details like "25 ft Class A, 30amp electric, requesting cement parking pads" as though she knew what she was talking about! She's a quick study! What will be the most challenging about this trip is that it is considered peak season in Florida, and I'm actually having to make a trip plan with reservations in advance - not like my spontaneous travelling out west and Alaska where we decided day by day where to stay! We left Stone Mountain Park, Atlanta at 10:15 am after much preparation yesterday and this morning - wardrobe swap at my storage unit traded my ice storm gear into summer clothing, added my new bike rack and bike since the unfortunate car accident that totaled them in October, and dropped my car at Mom's residence for storage. Lunch was a low point at the Pilot Truck stop in Dublin, GA - I promised Becky we will do better since I am used to gorgeous views on my trips! However, Becky is on a new health plan to improve nutrition so we had a good laugh at the picture of her eating our "healthy lunch" while the McDonald's sign loomed out our window! The day turned sunny and hot by afternoon, so all is good. We pulled into Skidaway Island State Park south of Savannah about 4pm, just before the skies darkened with clouds - could have been a gorgeous sunset, but not tonight! We did explore the campground and a bit of Sandpiper Trail before settling in for a dinner of Spaghetti squash/kale/turkey sausage sauté. Bud's famous brownies and peanut brittle will be required for dessert. Good to be talking with you all again, stay tuned!

Good work Becky! I'm proud of you. I knew you'd be a good navigator. Sounds like Colleen and you are off on a good adventure. Fun to read about everything.

Colleen - you need to stop and visit Bob and Joyce while in Florida. Sitting with Bob now in downtown Kent while we listen to my Bob play in a big band.
