Skidaway Isl, GA to Fernandina Beach, FL

Fernandina Beach, Florida, United States
We woke to a chilly, dreary, foggy day on Skidaway Island, but since we were moving slowly (had a good breakfast and searched for a campground for later this week), the weather had completely changed when we went out for an 11am hike - sunny and warm. We see much storm damage from Hurricane Mathew, huge trees uprooted and lots of chain saw activity trying to clear the trails. Several trails and piers are still closed from the storm in October 2016. But it's still pretty and so nice to be here in a bug free climate, except for the black ant swarm all over the water connections to the RV - hope I didn't bring any of them with me! We pulled out of Skidaway State Park at 1pm and promptly hit road construction so the 90 minute drive to Fernandina Beach turned into 2.5 hours. Checked into Fort Clinch (Florida) State Park by 3:30 and drove another couple miles into the park to reach the campground. It's a small campsite, only about 20 RV's, but very close to the beach. Unfortunately, dogs not allowed on the beach, so we had to do 1 walk for Sara, and another walk for us to explore the beach. They have great hammocks swinging on the beaches for public use, so we were able to watch the sunset from our hammocks. A stunning sunset today after a record setting temp of 78 degrees! The bath house is right in the center of our RV circle and is spotless! Hot showers were a special treat tonight. Then a Stella beer and dinner to finish us off. The campground is full tonight, but there are only 2 small campgrounds in this park compared to Skidaway which had a larger campground and many empty campsites, but not on the water. More to explore tomorrow!
