Fernandina Beach to St Augustine, FL

St. Augustine, Florida, United States
Gorgeous, warm, sunny weather! We started with a walk this morning - unfortunately, Sara took a walk without me! I was in the bathroom with only screen door closed, and I came out to find it open and Sara gone - after only 5 panicky calls, she came running back! Becky headed for the beach to walk, and I took to the roads since Sara not allowed on the beach. But you can walk for 10 miles within this park before seeing another site or road. We got back, ate breakfast, and packed up the RV by 10:30 (lots of sand to sweep out! - Sharon, your bamboo mats are a big help outside the door to decrease sand being carried in). We drove the RV over to Fort Clinch on the other side of the park so that Sara would have a place to hang out - no dogs allowed here either! But the ride would have been perfect for biking, must get back here with the bikes for another trip. The Fort Clinch tour was great - we started at the stockade (you know, my fave!), and moved through the living quarters, laundry, supply room, cannon ball storage, and tunnels under the fortress! It's also on the waterfront, so has a great view and strong winds. After the fort, we headed into Old Town Fernandina, a quaint old Florida town. We ended the walk with lunch on the pier at Brett Waterfront Cafe (which allows dogs on the patio, so Sara liked it too!). And then a quick stop at Publix on the way to St Augustine. We barely made our campground by 5pm, but settled in with full hookups (and cable) quickly. Our neighbor is from Long Island and loved Sara. We have a dog park here, but are disappointed to discover that we are not close to water and still a 10 min drive to town - there is a shuttle to the Old Town Trolley, but then what to do with Sara...may end up parking the RV in town so Sara isn't alone all day. For now, time to open some wine and enjoy the salmon that Lynn Egged for us before our departure.
