Key Largo to Big Pine Key, FL

Big Pine Key, Florida, United States
Catching up on my news today - yesterday was mostly an airport day and I didn't even get pics! We left Juno Beach at 9:30 am and made it to Miami Int'l Airport at 11:20 (allowing plenty of extra time for road, weather, and user error conditions! I did find the over-height vehicle parking lot due to good signage on approach, but dropped Becky on the complete opposite side of airport from where she needed to depart (sorry!). Good news was that I was on Karen's side of airport, altho she said it was still a long walk to baggage claim and her flight had been delayed due to weather issues. Good news was that no rain here in south FL but lots of wind, which is still hard to handle in the RV. Karen and I were on the road by 4pm, headed to our "luxury resort" in Key Largo. Becky was home safely in Atlanta before us! The drive to the Keys was a little harrowing - many lane changes, high winds, and the unknowns of a toll road: the signs say something about tolls charged by plates? I saw many banks of cameras, but never a check out booth - will I get a bill in the mail, or do they know my credit card, or will I pay up when I drive out?? Or have I broken the law, and will be picked up by FL Police any time now? That reminds me, I did get to see a cool detention center under the Miami freeway, prisoners running laps, lots of barbed wire coils, but unable to pull over to observe longer :(. So back to the Keys - stopped in Florida City for Walmart gas, a good move as gas has gone from $2.24 to $2.54 in the middle Keys, don't know what Key West will cost (BTW, I made it to 11 mpg on that last tank, best ever recorded!). But we barely made it to Point of View Campground for sunset - totally the highlight of the day!! Campground is nice, but lots of empty spaces, so not sure what makes it so expensive (except the sunset!). We pulled out the frozen Mahi fillets and sugar snap peas for a quick dinner. In casual conversation, Karen said that I told her we started at Key West on Jan 24, and I had thought it was Jan 23 - after checking my emails, I found she was right so I was again in a pinch to find another night's stay before entering Key West. Fortunately, we were able to get a "deal" for $105 + taxes at Sunshine Key RV Resort on Big Pine Key. So I could rest easy for another night - at least until the storm hit! About 3am the winds intensified to gale force, the RV was rocking and rolling, Sara was panting and frantic. An hour later the torrential rains, lightning, and thunder started - Sara finally settled down about 5am, so I felt the storm must be passing. We woke up to beautiful skies, but continued winds. I expected to find us flooded in the park, but only a few puddles remained. Breakfast outside, a quick walk along the water, and back on the road at 11am. Unfortunately, the weather is not conducive to considering snorkeling, kayaking, or biking so we're just enjoying the view. We tried to stop at Layton Nature Trail "across from Long Key State Park", but never found it. We did find Sombrero Beach in Marathon and were able to enjoy a picnic lunch on a beautiful beach (which allowed dogs and had plentiful parking on weekdays) just before the rain started again. Then back on the road to cross the Seven-Mile Bridge - much easier to drive than the 6-Mile tunnel to Whittier, Alaska! But there are sections of this road where winds hit so hard that I was weaving into the oncoming traffic, despite holding the wheel tightly with 2 hands and keeping my feet grounded on the floor! The water is a cloudy green, not as pretty as Juno Beach, so I'm hoping the improvement in weather will make driving easier and encourage outdoor activities with clear water. We are now checked into Sunshine Key - the center is an RV parking lot, but very pretty view of the Seven-Mile bridge, a small beach, and grassy areas around the edge of camp. Karen reports we missed water aerobics this am, but could get to line dancing tomorrow am! She's out jogging, Sara and I sit blogging and barking at passing dogs! (With our Stella in hand - looks like Happy Hour is ramping up here in the park!). Key West bound tomorrow!
