Stock Island, Florida, United States
Catching up on two days again - we've been exploring Key West by bus. I've learned that having a bike, or renting one, or a scooter, or even golf carts is a very common practice to get around here. Bus service is only about every 1.5 hours, which would not be bad if I didn't have Sara's daycare as a time constraint. I see many people from the campground also using taxis, so it must be a common issue. But rental places are on every corner, so would have been easy to rent in town. We have bikes here, but it's 18 miles round trip and the roads are very trafficky! So we bussed yesterday, and used the trolley today. Yesterday was the Ernest Hemmingway house - fascinating history, interesting life story, makes me want to read the biography and more of his novels! And of course, the cats are amazing - 53 residents at present, all named after movie stars, all vetted and spayed, many with excess toes! We also walked to the Bayview Park Farmer's Market, enjoyed lots of samples, bought fruits, lettuce, beets, and Indian Cilantro Peanut sauce! Also, enjoyed shrimp tacos at a marina restaurant. We wandered through the Key West cemetery before splitting up - Karen to go to the sunset celebration at Mallory Square, and me to pick up Sara. It was a spectacular night for a sunset, even from the campground!! Sara had a bad day at daycare, is not adjusting well - barked and upset til she had an accident in her crate! The girls were very forgiving, and have agreed to keep her one more day, and I'll be pre medicating her with Xanax! She is becoming neurotic in her old age!! We were up this morning, medicating Sara first, then dropping her off, then taking a bus to meet the Island Trolley. First stop was Fort Zachary Taylor on the southern point of Key West. They only had one tour per day, and we joined up for most of it - two great Forest Ranger guides there, good views, and then a trip over to the beaches. I would rate their beaches as great since they have some sand, but also shade trees over the picnic areas. Also, rental kayaks, umbrellas, etc. But, alas, we were not beaching it today, just walked in the water a bit, then back to the trolley to see the Customs House museum - tells the history of Key West, spotlights some of the famous artists, and of course more about Hemingway. We then rejoined the Trolley tour - learned about the island architecture (love the houses!) and little facts such as, if temps drop below 50 degrees here, schools are given a "snow day" since buildings are not built for "such cold weather" - even our driver, Jason, from Pittsburgh, could barely say that with a straight face!! Now this time the trolley let us off just short of Stock Island, and no bus was coming in time to get me to Sara's daycare, so we had to choose walk or taxi - we chose the 1.5 mile walk, but really had to hoof it to make it to daycare on time. Sara did not improve on Xanax :( but it was our last day! Then we took another walk to find the grocery store, Tom Thumb or Dion's?! Hey, they sold Stella, so don't laugh! That must have been 5-6 miles walking today, so Stella and a salad are on the menu tonight.

Guess travel adventures are not always easy... but you sure have persevered and tell a good story. Thanks! Love the "snow day" rules! And you could send the picture of you & your Emory Healthcare backpack in Key West back to the newsletter to show how far Emory "travels"... Keep on truckin'...
