Stock Island, Florida, United States
Had a great night, temp is low 60's making it perfect for open windows (don't worry, they only wedge open a few inches so it is safe from intruders!). Sara was not signed up for daycare so we planned a day close to "home" - freed the bikes from their rack and rode to the Botanical Gardens here on Stock Island. I would not make the trip again in this season, but it was a pretty retreat. Then we rode to the other side of island, scoping out better sunset views (got chased out of a ship marina for "trespassing" - never saw the signs, but we heeded the polite reprimand and turned around quickly! Next we discovered the Hogfish Bar - a local watering hole that serves the local fish called Hogfish and local pink shrimp. We had to ride past another "rough neighborhood" but the Hogfish Pub was actually very charming and surrounded by new condominiums and houseboats. We rode back to the RV, spent a little time at the pool (a bit chilly today), then started preparations for travel tomorrow (dumping), and got back on the bikes to head up to Hogfish. I wish we had found this place sooner, the campground had given us a discount coupon, but I never imagined it would be such a nice place in this neighborhood. But it was a great outdoor bar, Stella on tap!, great selection of fresh seafood, and a great hogfish dinner! Turns out Hogfish is very light and I received a huge piece with blackened scallops on the side. Would definitely recommend this place highly! We cycled home and got bikes and chairs loaded for tomorrow's departure since rain and "cold" is predicted - could get down to 48 degrees in Miami!! Pretty close to a "snow day" here in Key West! We know that we are leaving tomorrow, but we've been looking at the State Park Reservations sites every day showing no availabilty of sites except one day a site showed and we took time to research the park, and when we returned it was gone - tonight I did my routine check, and I saw one site available on Long Key State Park - I snatched it up! It says it's a waterfront view, which could be scary with tomorrow's heavy rain predictions!! Might be closer than waterfront, might be in the water! But I think we have scored a valuable site, and only $50!! Stay tuned! In retrospect, Boyd's Campground has not been such a bad deal - the campground is very nice, and transportation would have been OK by bus if I hadn't been constrained by Sara. Biking is also very easy and enjoyable here with rentals on every corner. As for Sara, she is officially suffering separation anxiety, despite trazadone today, still managed to rub her nose bloody on the front windshield while I was gone - no more alone time for awhile!! And please send me (for Sara) any extra tranquilizers you may have lying around!
