Bonita Springs to Fort Myer to Estero, FL

Estero, Florida, United States
Finally had time to enjoy myself the past couple days - have secured reservations in advance and now have time to play! My second day in Bonita Springs involved walking Sara to the town Dog Park, about 3 miles away! The plan was to tire her so much that I would be able to leave her for some pool time. The dog park was beautiful, 3 separate areas for small, medium, and large dogs. I also walked through downtown Bonita Springs which is being turned into a Riverwalk area - very charming area, but lots of construction for now! We got back to the RV with Sara hot and tired, so I closed all windows, turned TV and A/C on, then gave her a treat and headed to the Resort pool. She stood on the dash the whole time I was gone, watching the people, but did not bark or rub her nose raw, so had a successful break in a very nice pool. My neighbors were there, again very friendly, but everyone wanted to know where else I had travelled in "my rig" (I think the office girl had mentioned to several people that I had "come from Alaska", word must get around here quickly! I was invited to a movie in the Rec center, but I had a date with laundry, so had to decline. The next morning was time to move on, to Fort Myers Beach RV Resort, where I thought the dog beach people had stayed. So my plan was to go to dog beach for the early day and then continue on a few miles to the new RV site for one more night. The dog beach plan worked out great - Saturday morning I knew would be crowded, but it was actually lots more fun with tons of action!. There was plenty of room for all the activity since I got there at low tide - some dogs sunning, others doing the "crazy dog run" through the water; dolphins swimming close in, boats anchored offshore with dogs jumping deck from there! We even saw 5 other Weims! It was cool, breezy, and full sun! About 3:00, I decided I would head for the new "beach resort". I drove north through the islands connecting to Fort Myer Beach, passing lots of fun areas, the Red Coconut RV Resort which comes highly recommended, many public beaches, restaurants, shops - a nice beach town. All the way I was thinking, "Great! This is a perfect area for the night", but GPS kept leading me farther and farther, until we went over another bridge onto mainland Fort Myers, where I found my RV park in an industrial area with car repair and motorcycle clubs! It was an OK place, packed in very tight, with 300 sites!! Not very friendly people, now that I'm spoiled by Bonita Springs! But, it served the function, I'm starting a book on Kindle finally - haven't even had time to read lately! I was up this morn, tried to find a doggie daycare near town so I could check out Fort Myer Artfest - spoke to someone who sounded promising, but she couldn't do it today - she seemed to think dogs would be permitted at Artfest. So I took a chance on driving into downtown, praying I would find parking for the RV! I took a spot in the first Event Lot I came upon, and it was a great deal - a huge field, plenty of space, and a free shuttle to the festival. I asked if dogs were allowed on shuttle, and driver said, "yes, all service dogs allowed", wink, wink! I felt guilty abusing that right, but I wasn't displacing anyone on the bus, so off we went. They dropped us at one end of town, and we met many other dogs along the way. The festival reminds me of the old Piedmont Park Art Festival, big but not huge, really nice things but not all outrageous pricing. One of my favorites were paintings by Chip DuPont - a painting with vivid colors reminiscent of folk art but framed in contrasting colored frames that look like shiny leather, but are actually carved wood (www.DuPontStudio.com). But, alas, only room for one picture in my RV, and that space is taken!! I then enjoyed a grouper platter on the waterfront (while Sara cleaned up the picnic area). Then back to the RV, which was also parked right next to Publix, so perfect opportunity to stock up on a few items. Cousin Lynn meets me tomorrow, so better stock up on Big Green Egg cookables! Sara waits patiently on the RV dash (A/C running) while I shop and then we're back on the road to tonight's one night stand - Kereshon State Park in Estero. Actually I'm headed back south almost back to Bonita Springs, but I found this state park site suddenly on the web, so snatched it up! Turns out, I registered at gate, then drove to my site to find that I am in a handicapped site! Now I feel really bad, don't know if I signed up for this or if they release them to "general public" at some point, but am glad to be staying only one night! The park is an old Koreshan Unity Settlement (a branch of the Moravian religion), and was settled in 1880 by followers of the religion - so there is an old settlement on the Estero River, with water sports, botanical gardens planted by the Koreshan people, and short hiking trails. A very nice park with water and electric, and ...receiving 16 TV channels despite no cable! And guess what tonight is?! Super Bowl for Atlanta Falcons and I can see it perfectly!!!! Life is good!
