Stone Mountain, Georgia, United States
I really hated leaving St Pete, but need to head home to get the taxes done. Lynn needed to be home by Friday night, but I chose to stop at a GA state park that was about halfway back to Atlanta, just north of Valdosta. Reed Bingham State Park, I had never heard of it, but was pleasantly surprised when I arrived. A huge lake, hiking trails through the "river swamp", great campground, and good biking. Friday night got pretty cold (50's) but it was downright hot by 11am. Fortunately, the hiking trails were shaded and along the river - I never heard of river swamp before, but now I know what it looks like. I had warning signs for Eastern Indigo snakes and gopher turtles and alligators around the lake. I saw none of them, but was thankful for the boardwalks across that swamp! Met a nice couple on the river, who told me about the recent tornado that hit Albany in this area, I think the same storm that hit Florida while I was driving to the Keys. They described a mobile home park that had 400 homes, with only 5 found intact - maybe that's why there was a letter in my welcome pack instructing everyone in the campground where to go in the event of severe weather! After the hike, I dropped Sara off, and took a bike ride through the park. I found it especially amusing that they have a nice beach area with a warning sign "Beware, alligators present". I asked a ranger about that warning and he said they did get 4 alligators in the swimming area during mating season, but "usually" they don't come down there. When asked if alligators would be obvious swimming into the area, he said yes, unless they were going in for an attack, in which case you would never see them coming!!! So, no swimming for me in this lake, ever! On the way back, I noticed the campground host had Streetsboro, Ohio listed as his home - a town near Kent where I went to college. I stopped to chat and we had a good conversation with many rv'ing tips shared (some good apps to try, how to be a campground host, etc). Sunday morning it's back to Atlanta for a couple weeks and then leaving for the trip to southwest. Just calculated this month's gas mileage - all 10-11 mpg with the nice flat landscape of Florida!
