Rockport, TX to Corpus Christi, TX

Corpus Christi, Texas, United States
We woke up to a gorgeous, sunny, breezy, warm day! On Sara's morning walk, I met several dog lovers and ended up picking up some good information for the rest of the trip. One Colorado camper had info about the Hill Country and San Antonio, so we ended up making a few more reservations for next week based on her recommendations. Thankfully, Spring Break should be winding down and we didn't have any trouble with these reservations. Breakfast was outside with Sara sunbathing, then unhooked, and finally pulled out at noon. We drove to Port Aransus where we caught another ferry, this one only 3 minutes to cross, but waited 30 minutes to get to the ferry. We also sat next to a Seadrilling rig while waiting for the ferry - you have no idea of their size until you park your "tiny RV" next to an oil drilling rig. We later read that these 3 rigs are being "stored" here until needed for new oil exploration, apparently a sign that oil industry is slow at present. After the ferry ride, we came into the town of Port Aransus, and a lot of spring break action - traffic, crowds, and store sales. We came through that and drove south to Mustang Island State Park for a picnic lunch on the beach. I don't know when it happened, but the sky had clouded over and the wind made it kind of chilly. So as we dressed for the beach in a long sleeve tshirt, others were swimming in the ocean in skimpy swimsuits! The beach is long and undeveloped, but they do allow driving on the beach in certain sections. We had a long walk and spent about 2 hours at this park, then drove into Corpus Christi to our Colonia del Rey RV Park. I took this park because I was afraid we wouldn't get into the Padre Island National Seashore Campground since it is a first come, first serve location. And CdR Park was close to the Padre Islands, but we were very disappointed to find it is nowhere near the water - will require driving to the beaches. But we do have full hookups and clean bathrooms (was going to name 3 good things, but couldn't think of a third) - I'm hoping the Padre Islands will be worth the day visits we get while parked here :) But we relaxed outside tonight, small glass of wine with the TV news to bring us up to date. Dinner was a homemade Chicken Pot Pie from the Buttermilk Pie Shop in Gainesville, GA (thank you, Pat!) with sugar snap peas. Linda may have a reaction tonight because we have NO sweets in the house - we walked the perimeter inside the park looking for even a candy machine, and then walked a ways outside the park, thinking there should be a gas station or something close by, but no, nothing!! I've even scoured the kitchen cabinets, but really don't have any sweets hidden away - note to self, pack some chocolate in the hidden cubby to have for this type of emergency! No telling how Linda will be by morning!
