Although we are staying at same campground for 3 nights, we must unhook RV in order to drive to the beaches. So this morning we had breakfast, and were thrilled to wake to beautiful blue, sunny skies, so hurried to get on the road to the beaches. It is about 20 miles across the John F Kennedy causeway, onto Padre Island, then out to entrance of Padre Island National Seashore Park, Malaquite Visitor Center and campground. We also had delays since they were paving the road, requiring one way traffic only for a short stretch. The drive out is across grassy dunes, supposedly inhabited by coyotes, rattlesnakes, deer, kangaroo rats, predator crabs, and laughing gulls - to name a few that caught my attention in the Visitor Center, but fortunately I did not have to meet in person! We made sandwiches in the RV and packed our chairs, beach mats, suntan spray, drinks, dog water, and magazines to head to the beach. Actually a short walk, with people on the beach, but not crowded. They say it reached 80 degrees today, but I would have said 70 degrees because it was so windy with gusts to 35mph, making it feel very cool. We then walked the beach which turned into a driving beach after about 1/2 mile, and then seemed to go on forever with cars, trucks, RV's cruising or parked/camping on upper beaches. You are allowed to camp along these beaches free of charge as long as you like (after National Park admission fee). The driving beach is 60 miles long, with the first 5 miles being hard packed, the rest requiring 4 wheel drive. (During turtle nesting season you are warned to avoid running over the endangered Kemp's Ridley sea turtles - apparently the largest nesting area for these turtles in the U.S.). I did see my sister RV parked on the driving beach, but I would still feel nervous about driving out there. Good Sam might stop taking my calls if I call again too soon! We loved the day at the beach, but packed up at 4:45 pm to drive home. We had seen a sign about a Farmer's Market on the Island, so took a detour to check it out. We parked in a beautiful location on the intercostal waterway because I was avoiding the more crowded church parking lot of the market. What I did not consider was the field we walked across was a mass of burrs, and poor Sara took the brunt of that bad judgement! All 4 paws were coated with burrs, and then Linda and I felt the pain as we pulled them all out, and I had to carry Sara the rest of the way across the field. As usual, Sara didn't complain, and was excited to be at the market - especially when she spied the Texas Sealife Center display of animals - turtles, a boa snake, and a lizard moving around the parking lot on a leash! Oh, joy!!! Linda and I found home grown arugula, homemade Italian pesto/sun dried tomatoes, Italian meatballs, Texas grass fed beef (flat iron steak) for another night, and a Sriracha Lime Chicken Salad with grilled pineapple for tonight. We got back to the RV and decided our view out onto the waterway could not be any better, so we ate dinner at the RV, watching paddleboarders and fishermen on their boat docks at their condos. Then it was a drive over the causeway, a quick stop at HEB Plus (a Texas sized grocery store) and home to our campground by 7:30pm - a long day but good times! Now for RV hookup, "desanding " and showers!
