San Antonio to Fredericksburg to Junction, TX

Junction, Texas, United States
Sorry, didn't write last night - had to catch up on bills and mapping the next week. Yesterday we left San Antonio, after another visit to Discount Tire (they offer free tire checks and fill - compared to Camping World charging about $20!). Since that last tire rotation, I can't access the valve stems on rear left, and they have to remove the hub cap to check/fill them. I had checked the other tires and front two were exactly 80 lbs (goal weight) but I got 74 on one of the rear, which made me nervous. But Discount Tire check showed they were all exactly 80 lbs so we were good to go - off to Austin Airport to drop Linda. Due to Sara's issues, she completely missed seeing her nephew, but it was actually closer for me to drive her San Antonio to Austin airport than to try to get to her nephew's house. It took about 1hr, 20 mins and I had her to airport by 1:20pm for her 4:00 flight - Ken had mentioned Salt Lick BBQ in Austin, so I checked it out and found there was an airport location and a full service restaurant in Driftwood, only 11 miles off my route to Fredericksburg. So Linda tasted at the airport, and I found the main location - between farms and wineries, with indoor and outdoor seating under the trees, and live country music. There was one hut just for takeout orders, and dogs were welcome everywhere outside, so made it easy to order my combo plate of ribs and brisket. Both were delicious, but brisket was the most moist I've eaten. Then it was back on the road, heading toward Fredericksburg. I had thought I might be able to look and move on, but I was driving into town at 5:15pm and when I started calling campgrounds, none were answering, saying closed for night. I wasn't too panicked since there was a Walmart in town, but I found Quiet Creek Resort on far side of town who mentioned after hours vacancies, so I took a chance by driving there. Fortunately, they did have a box with 2 unassigned "vacant" sites, so I claimed one and hoped that was OK. It was full hookup and I met the neighbors (now from Fort Worth, used to work at CDC in Atlanta) and he warned me he could not get cable TV. Don't know why, but I couldn't either - later owner suggested there is a difference in analog/high def TV settings because they have a brand new high def system...anyway, went back to antenna for the eve, but mainly worked on bills and mapping. I also had to configure the RV to keep Sara from jumping to the bed, and ripping out staples. I was up this morning, ran up to check in at office, ate a leisurely breakfast outside (weather is windy cool in shade, but very warm in sun - perfect!), and then set off for town. Walmart again to get rice and chicken for Sara, then the Texas Rangers Memorial (really wanted the picture of their wildflowers), but came in on the end of "Cowboy Church" held in the pavilion - guitars, country singers, etc. It was also next to Fort Martin Scott, the first fort established in Western Texas (1848). I then found easy parking in town, and was able to stroll the town, even going into shops that state "pet friendly". It was originally settled by German immigrants, so many German restaurants and European influences in the buildings. You know I love that German culture! Then Sara and I got on the road to "west", didn't know how far. I had read about another Schreiner City Park in Junction, TX (free!) along the South LLano Riverfront so I followed that course at about 4:00 - but one detail I had not noticed in the reviews was that there was no Verizon service, not just at the park, but in the whole town of Junction! It's been a long time since I had no Verizon service, and I started to think about being totally out of communication, and that didn't seem like a good idea, while boondocking in the park! I circled the city a couple times, and was actually flagged down by a lady in town, who asked if I needed help finding the campgrounds, said GPS often failed due to poor service, and she offered directions and advice on locations - very kind considering I had stopped to take pictures of the deserted Main Street in town, really looks like a Texas Ghosttown!! But good people here! I headed back to the first "official" Good Sam approved campground that I passed coming into town and signed in since they have Internet (and cable is bonus!). Turns out the owner's wife is from Roswell, GA so she was very welcoming! Said she ended up here, thanks to her husband! Look at my pictures of this town, and I would say that is true love!! I was happy to have leftover pork chops and asparagus for an instant dinner, and Sara is thrilled with her new bland diet of chicken and rice! Another beautiful evening, cool and breezy - perfect for our riverfront walk and dinner outside!
