Junction to Senora, TX

Sonora, Texas, United States
It's another beautiful day, but still a little dismal looking in downtown Junction as I left. There were actually signs that said some stores were "Open", but I saw no cars or people. That woman that appeared yesterday to give me directions might have been an angel sent to help! Now on the road to Sonora - recommended by the volunteer at Padre Island who swore these are spectacular caves! So I drove about 1 hour west on I-10 to get to Sonora, then 6 miles south to Private Road 4468, then left til dead end in middle of cactus fields. Thank goodness there were a couple signs along the way, or I would have thought this was a hoax! Didn't pass any other cars on the road, but was relieved to see 3 other RV's in the parking lot when I arrived. They have their own campground which was totally empty when I arrived, later having 2 other RV's for overnight stay. We do have water/electric connections, but no cable or any channels by antenna. I would have liked to see local weather since I hear of a big storm headed this way tomorrow night, but can't even get a radio station! I might have 1 bar on my Verizon service, so hoping to get in a few phone calls and maybe internet service. But first I checked in at desk and was told next tour would be 1:30, no other tours scheduled today unless more people showed up, so I better go at 1:30. My concern was that Sara needed her "tranquilizer" one hour before a "stressful activity", so had to move quickly to medicate her. They have kennels here, but those are crates in an unattended room, worse than leaving her in the RV. So she got medicated, walked, fed, and I grabbed a sandwich - Sara is now looking drugged, barely holding up her head so I try to sneak out the door. Three minutes later I could hear a few barks, but they were "slow barks", half hearted, so I continued on to the office for the tour. Tour was supposed to be about 2 hours, 2.5 miles of walking, 360+ steps in a 75 degree cave that had high humidity, making it feel 85 degrees! We entered through an area that has been enlarged, but this cave was discovered in 1905 when a man saw his dog follow a racoon through a 12 inch hole in the ground - sound like Daisy Mae the coon hound??! Anyway, the cave trails actually traverse about 7 miles but go down below surface level a long way. It was impressive to start, but it was more stunning the farther we travelled. I like caves, but this was unique in the amount of formations that look like melted wax or drip sand castles. I also met a cute Dutchman on the tour but he wasn't camping here, headed on to Big Bend National Park. Another single woman driving from CA to Houston and back was also "exploring towns" between. And a family from Alabama (visiting relatives in Junction) and two older couples who had a great deal of trouble coming up the steps. And I admit that the air in the cave did make it even harder to breathe hard! But I would highly recommend this trip! Next, I rushed back to check on Sara (who was NOT barking, but a little anxious) and then went up to relax on the big front porch of the store, trying to get some phone reception. Dinner of leftovers again - and while sitting outside, I began to see the appearance of many deer - counted 18 in one gathering! Sara was oblivious at first (still drugged!), but they seemed to come stare at us, and even when she got up, they came closer and looked her over! Wonder if they thought she was one of their own? So I'm finishing my blog for the night, plotting tomorrow, called in a reservation for Sedona in April (have to settle for a space that won't allow a slide out :(, so better get working on future reservations as sites are filling. Thought Kaitlin might be able to come out for a Grand Canyon trip in late April, but sites are full and she doesn't have enough time - hate that!! Hopefully, on to Carlsbad Caverns if weather isn't too bad tomorrow - rain and thunderstorms predicted, pass many road flood warnings and flood gauge signs on the roads here! Doubt this RV will float!
