Sonora, TX to Carlsbad, NM

Carlsbad, New Mexico, United States
Today was just a day of travel - my big accomplishment was entering New Mexico and Mountain Time Zone, gained another hour! I woke to threatening skies and mild wind, on the road by 10am, with the driving being pretty easy. I started a book on tape that Scott and Pat gave me for Christmas, about a dog named Boo, and that was very entertaining! The radio in this RV is poor, I got out of the habit of using Satellite Radio when the fuse blew in dash so it couldn't plug in, but even the sound is poor due to loud road noise. But I was able to hear the DVD clearly, so that may be my future plan! I saw the landscape turning to desert plateaus, very different from the lush hill country of vineyards and trees. I passed through some non memorable towns on I-10 and then headed north on Hwy 285 (not the Atlanta perimeter!). Many large trucks and I think gas line country. The first couple hours were not bad, but the last hour of my 6 hour trip (which included stopping for lunch, gas, and a few pictures) became windy and very tiring to fight the wind gusts. I arrived about 4pm my time, 3pm MST!, at Carlsbad RV Park and Campground. Initially, they told me they only had a water sight (no electric/cable/sewer), but it was cheap so I signed up for $24. When I got here, he led me to a site that was very tight between a cabin and a tree, but had full hookups - I told him they told me no electric, and he called and talked to office, they all came out to look, and finally decided I could stay. Well the electric and cable TV were on opposite side of my hookups, so TV cable did not reach. I've had this problem before, so decided to walk next door to the RV supply store and purchase a longer cable. Brought that back and got all hooked up before the big wind storm hit. They say 40-50 mph winds (thanks to my cable TV news), and I watched the RV across from me get his awning ripped off during one of the gusts - the sky was dark blue/black and sand/dust was blowing like desert sand storms. I was very glad to be squeezed in between the cabin and tree, couldn't possibly blow over! I made dinner and was settled in, when the knock on the door ruined it all! Turns out they did make an error in assignment, I needed to move between the next cabin, where there was no electricity, just water hookup! But the guy was so nice and apologetic, helped me unhook and rehook, that I couldn't be mad, just sad to lose my privileges. He did say my stay would now be FREE, so I may actually stay on another night! And he has the electrician coming tomorrow, hoping to get electric to this site tomorrow. Anyway, they've been very nice and have even been searching for a dog sitter for me while I go to caverns tomorrow. We thought we had a plan, as the clerk's sister said she could sit with Sara, but then I realized I need to drive the RV to the caverns, still 30 miles away. So I think Sara is going to get the sleepy drugs again, and I will leave her in RV, and do a marathon running tour through caves - they say shortest self guided is 1.5 hours by using elevators, much longer if you walk down. Would prefer to walk down, but will see tomorrow. Another ironic part to this story, is that I just noticed the RV that did get my first site, is another Axis, almost same as mine, from GA also! Now it is still very windy and getting cold (down to 48 degrees tonight, feels like 38!) - just a couple hours north of here in Taos and mountain region they are getting a foot or more of snow! Could rush up for some skiing, or NOT! Very glad to be parked during this wind!! Supposed to clear tomorrow!
