Carlsbad to Las Cruces, NM

Las Cruces, New Mexico, United States
As I went to bed last night, I started worrying about Sara again - she was shivering for about 1 hour before I got her warmed and settled. Then I lay awake wondering if she has a fever and sepsis from her surgical wound, or if she was in pain, compounded by the fact she had not pooped for 1 1/2 days (not like her), and of course she is still lethargic anyway from the drugs I gave her for her solo time in the RV yesterday. I researched vets in Carlsbad and Las Cruces, and went back and forth in my thoughts until I was 30 mins out of town. I didn't know if the Las Cruces vets would even know what to do since they probably don't do Bloat surgery in this small town, and I wanted to give her more time to poop, and Las Cruces (4+ hours away) had an emergency clinic, so hopefully they were familiar with bloat surgery?! My other decision was choosing the route to Las Cruces - the southern route through El Paso, which involved crossing the Guadalupe Pass, that is "often closed down due to winds, cause those trucks don't slow down and tip over" according to the desk clerk at campground! Other option was a northern route which comes out through White Sands and Alamogordo, "the scenic route, about same driving time". But that's not what Garmin recommended, and I had to listen to her for the first 30 miles telling me to "make a u-turn", go back! But I continued on the northern route, a good road, no traffic, just miles of desert...at first. Then I saw the mountains in the distance, they just start suddenly in one line, and one of them even seemed to have snow on it! I was absorbed in my book on tape (very good dog story! - "A Dog Named Boo") and next thing you know I was climbing those mountains, and unexpectedly I was seeing major snow around me, signs that said to watch for snow plows, and then signs for an old Ski Resort, abandoned ski lift and all! That's where I got out of the RV, took pics, tried to get Sara to do business, and left the lights on the RV, which I do frequently. But I kept walking Sara down the road through melting snow and mud, and as I turned around, realized the lights were now out on the RV. I ran back with fears of a dead battery in the ghost ski resort, and a dog needing emergency care. Thank goodness, the RV started up fine, maybe my lights go out on their own after awhile, will have to study that phenomenon later! Just thankful to be out of the snow and back on the road. Next came the mountain roads down, lots of runaway truck ramps and one great tunnel with high enough clearance for me to clear in Big Bertha! As I came down, I saw a line of glimmer down in the flat lands - looked like water or a mirage, but turned out to be White Sands. I've seen them before, but it's so surprising to see the contrast to the rest of the desert - I read it's gypsum deposits from 250 million years ago, and still white and clean! Just a quick stop here, because Sara was having no results, now 48 hours, and I have visions of intestinal blockage in mind. I drove straight to the Emergency Vet in Las Cruces (the far side of town!) only to find it doesn't open til 6pm, and it was 4:15 - they had a list of local vets, the first 2 closing at 5 and wouldn't see me. Another was recommended because they are open til 7, but back across town. We did get seen fairly quickly, but vet couldn't decide if this was obstruction or not, finally did X-rays only to be more questionable due to pockets of air in intestines. She is calling a vet in Tuscon first thing am, to see if we need to get there quickly, or if this can "watch and wait". They were so sweet to offer me camping in their parking lot (with a permission letter in case police questioned me!), but it looked pretty isolated so I moved on to Walmart at next exit - also had to buy pumpkin for Sara to increase fiber in her bland diet! And here I am, boondocking at Walmart, where Sara has finally produced a specimen!! Now I can rest easier tonight, but am still worried about her gut. Was hoping to stay in Las Cruces for the downtown market, but will wait for vet's advice in am.
