Tucson, Arizona, United States
Can't believe I've been here a week now, have never stayed so long in one location! Partly I was waiting for friend Kennie, who was supposed to meet me in Tucson, but storms in Atlanta and Richmond cancelled her flights...and the rescheduled flight was cancelled also, so she had to give up on getting a flight out here in time to get home again. It's hard to believe all that bad weather is going on since it is now 90 degrees by afternoon, yet still 48-52 degrees here at night. We had one day of severe winds again, so glad we were not driving to Sedona that day! So I have been seeing Tucson on my own and enjoying the luxury of this RV Campground. Wednesday morning was bagel social hour at the KOA - met a guy from Ohio who split a choc/choc chip muffin with me - that led to a discussion of his son's bone marrow transplant and son's graduation from Kent State University, where I graduated - just a lot of coincidences! Then I went to the Pima Air Museum, mainly because it was close to me, an easy drive, and dogs are welcome! At least, the walking part of the tour - I did put her in the RV while I took the tram tour. They had presidential planes and helicopters, WWII planes, Vietnam planes and helicopters, small jets and huge cargo planes all within 5 hangars and several fields. I'm not normally so interested in planes, but this museum combined history with the planes involved. That vist took almost 4 hours, and I didn't even have time to do the Boneyard Tour of all military planes in storage, either waiting for renovation or being used for parts to service older planes - apparently was used in filming a scene in Transformers. Thursday I took the RV downtown to see the Presidio district - old town and historic houses. I thought I was doing Sara a favor by letting her come along, but we both learned how dry and hot 90 degrees is in the desert. We kept changing the side of the street to keep to shade, and Sara was actually hopping when the sidewalks got hot enough to burn the pads of her feet. We finally found respite at La Cocina, a restaurant in a courtyard of shops, shaded and cool. I had ginger lemon iced tea that was wonderful along with chiles relleno, also excellent. They served Sara her own bowl of water, and she snacked on China berries off the ground until I caught her (and then had to do an Internet search to see if they are poisonous). We were going to walk to the Mercado Market, but the heat was getting to us, so we went back to the RV and cranked up the A/C! Friday, I took Sara to Petmart Doggie Daycare and then proceeded to the Desert Museum - kind of like a huge outdoor cactus garden and zoo combined. Loved seeing the rattlesnakes, but made me think hiking is not on my wish list now! The cactus are in bloom now, and I learned how much you really don't want to get pricked with their stickers - apparently very difficult to remove the stickers - another reason to avoid the hiking here! I also saw a newborn Bighorn Sheep lamb, just learning to walk, on a rock canyon! I also had to drive through a rock canyon called Gates Pass to get to and from the museum, in the RV! Scenery is stunning, but kind of scary! Then back to pick up Sara at doggie camp, where she came away with a report card for the day - as expected, followed the person around like she was "teacher's pet". On Saturday, I made the decision to extend time in Tucson and cancel the trip to Sedona for now - I've seen Sedona before, and Kennie has cancelled her trip, so I'm now thinking of heading to Yuma, AZ next. Saturday and Sunday, I took to the Loop bike trail, north on Saturday and south on Sunday. I had to medicate Sara for my absence, but she was still an anxious mess when I returned. But the bike ride was great fun and soooo different - saw roadrunners, bunnies, prairie dogs all within the city limits. It's wonderful to have miles of flat trails - I covered about 30 miles over the 2 days. And then came back to relax at the pool, pick grapefruit and lemons for my trip, and share a tilapia dinner with the neighbors. I will be very sorry to leave Tucson, but I do need to get on to Phoenix for some maintenance work on the RV.
