Phoenix, AZ

Parker, Arizona, United States
Finally made it to Phoenix, AZ today - kind of my rest and relax station for 2-3 weeks. I can visit family, and love Phoenix (my grandmother lived her final years here, so I loved coming to this climate and city - it's so different from Atlanta!), and also need to get some work done on the RV (the collision repair, and see if they can get some valve extenders for the tires, and routine oil change to engine and generator, and fix the fuse in front USB ports that Camping World of Atlanta never corrected...). And I hope Sara can get back to better health - she is still so listless, eating poorly, and sleeps every minute that I'm not walking her (or leaving her - you would think she could sleep then!). I had a little trouble at La Paz Campground last night - decided to test my cable TV - wondered if there were any English stations, but worse yet, TV's would not even turn on! Thought about remote batteries, then realized it was both TV's, then realized it was all electric to RV - checked the electric post and found red lights on the surge guard. Tried turning off electric and restarting, which caused a bad sound, so I just unplugged totally and consulted my neighbors this morning. I was worried the whole surge guard was ruined and that I needed another before tonight's campground, but Charlie seemed to feel it would be OK with a different electric hookup. Jim from the other side, came to look and hooked it up to his post, and it appeared to work, so I let it go for now and hope it works here in Phoenix. Charlie and his wife, were the ones who pointed out the wild burros, brought the map out to show me best way to Phoenix, and told me to only go to Thirsty Devil Restaurant on south side of beach; then Jim comes over, gives me a short cut to get to Phoenix, tells me how to boondock all over this region (he's one of those people who camps in the middle of the desert or in the AZ mountains using his solar panels so he has no camping expenses, except when he splurges by coming to the county campground for electricity) and recommended never going to the Thirsty Devil ("too many yuppies, not friendly, but go to bar at north end of beach for 'really friendly' people") - anyway, he came over 4 times to talk, and I think it was making Charlie's wife nervous because she would then come over "to protect me" - I don't think I needed protection, but I've never had so much company on this trip! So after all their assistance, I was able to pull out at 10:30 am, stopped for gas and one rest, got into Phoenix with thousands of other cars, cruised an Episcopal church for tomorrow's Easter services, and got into Hacienda Solano about 2:15. It's rather disappointing from appearances - definitely a trailer park first, but it's in a great location for walking and near relatives, and Ed has already come over to offer me coffee in the morning! He does seem very nice, so maybe it won't be so bad! The campsite is really tight, but the surge protector seems to be working. May have to continue looking for another campground here! But I'm officially on vaca from the blog (unless something interesting develops - like I feel a need to curse Camping World of Phoenix as well!). Hoping it's just a relaxing break and hope to get back on the road in May to head to the National Parks north of here. Until then...
