This morning after breakfast we took off for the Himba Village Tour. There are three tribes left in Namibia, the Himba's, the Demba's and the Herero's which are now all sedentary tribes. Some tribes are composed of modern dress women but we saw mostly traditional costumes on our morning tour. The Himba's have red skin which is made from the power of a stone that is mixed with some oils and applied once to twice daily. These women do not wash as this is their way of freshening up. They also heat up odourant plants and let the smoke perfume their bodies and clothing.
The Demba's do not color their skin with the reddish cream but they wear colourful clothing and coloured beads in their hair
. We seen a few women walking on the side of the road of which Francois took pictures. The last group is the Herero's tribe that adorn a long dress of German inspired style with a head piece that resembled the horns of cattle (a two by four piece of wood) covered in material to match their elaborate dresses and worn over the forehead.
We spent three hours on the tour of the Himba village of which two were with the tribe. It was really a unique experience and very well organized. We did not have to pay for each picture as it is included in the price of the tour. We did buy a few bracelets to encourage them in their work and our tour guide brought them a huge sack of rice, corn, and a few other items to share amongst themselves. Each time they bring tourists, they visit a different family In order to share the wealth.
