Transfer to a More Rural Life

Honor, Michigan, United States
Long driving day today—from Akron, OH to Sleeping Bear Dunes National Preserve on the northwestern shore of Michigan (the eastern shore of Lake Michigan). We broke the drive up with a very nice visit with Jim and Sara Corson, who are just beginning post-doctoral work at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. We ate at a very nice restaurant downtown—the Grizzly Pub. I can recommend it if you're ever in the area. I had a great hamburger, but Tim’s dish turned out to be a lot more interesting: a special steak "sandwich" with potato pancakes as the “bread.”  Some sort of fancy aioli sauce. Looked delicious.

Sara gave us some homemade chocolate chip cookies for the road—she must have doubled the chocolate chips . We approve. The cookies are delicious!

We rolled into the campground about 8:00, and when we finished setting up camp about 9, it was still full light. It is just now getting dark, and I’m writing at 10 p.m. We’re packing up every item that might have some sort of smell (except ourselves, I guess), as the rangers were quite stern about the problem of bears. Tomorrow we will begin to explore the lakeshore—plenty to do for the two days we are here.
