It Ain't a Lake Visit Without a Ride on the Lake

No point in going to a lake without getting in it or on it at least once, so we took a three-hour tour up the coast to the Sleeping Bear Dune. The boat ride left from Frankfort, about 10 miles south of the park, and cruises up the coast for about two hours (against the wind and tide) then turns around and comes back. Most of the ride is just getting there and getting back, but it includes a pretty decent narration about the geography and geology of the region and about the history of many of the structures along the way. It's nothing fancy, but this is about the only way you can get a wide view of the features that gave the park its name (unless you have access to a helicopter, which we did not!).

Got back to the campsite about 4; I stayed around to re-inflate the air mattress while Tim went off to do a hike out to the shore . Then I took a nap, as staying up until 2:30 to see movies at the drive-in is fun, but in my case, anyway, mandates further sleep to compensate. Roasted steak and potatoes baked in the coals of the campfire for dinner tonight, then tomorrow we’re off to Mackinac Island.
