We headed out for Hilton Head this morning. We weren't sure if we were going to spend a night there or just drive through. In the late 80s Armando worked for a company that bought a property in Harbor Town on Hilton Head and he made several trips there and worked on the project, so he wanted to go back and see it again.
Plus, the lighthouse is kind of the emblem of Hilton Head. I didn't know it was the largest island along this coast. When we got near Harbor Town we found out there's a golf tournament there today and they wouldn't let us go there. We really wanted to see the buildings he worked on 30 years ago. In fact I think I was even more disappointed than he was.
So we left there and headed for Beaufort where Pat Conroy, author of The Prince of Tides, lived, wrote and died. It's another town full of old beautiful houses and a nice waterfront where we ate lunch.
This whole area is a series of islands surrounded by bays and salt marshes - Beaufort, Port Royal, Hilton Head, Fripp Island, Harbor Island, Parris Island - this area is beautiful. Beaches and waterfront, kayaking, fishing but also beautiful old live oaks with Spanish moss hanging down, beautiful antibellum houses. We've talked about renting a condo for a month near the beach - we've decided if we ever do this is where we want to be. It's much prettier than Florida, and sandwiched between Savannah and Charleston if we get bored in our condo we can go to either one of those interesting beautiful cities.
Pictures of Beaufort houses - note a lot of the porch ceilings are painted haint blue.

The dental clinic for the marines on Parris Island was one of my projects back in the 80's. They always bring the new recruits in for their processing in the middle of the night so they dont see how beautiful it all is.

I agree about preferring to stay in this area over Florida. When we visited Charleston we actually stayed at a campground on Edisto Island. It was a lovely place. It got hit hard by the last hurricane.

When you go to Wilmington, try eating at one of our favorite places: The Copper Penny. It's a bar & grill type place downtown. Bryan and his wife live on North 4th St. near UNC Wilmington.

Thanks, we will look for it. I'm trying to eat as much seafood as I can before we leave the coast.

Thierry and I traveled a lot of where have been going. Charleston and we did do the aircraft carrier, submarine and destroyer - his favorite was Savanah and still says he wants to go back. We stayed in a bed and breakfast in Beaufort and loved this town. Sure beats Bangkok!
