Cape Fear

Wilmington, North Carolina, United States
We had breakfast on our balcony this morning and then said goodbye to our great beach hotel.

Armando decided he wanted to play real golf so we went to a par 3 course where he played 9 holes and I played caddy.

Then I challenged him to one more mini-golf - I still didn't beat him but got within 2 points this time. With a little cheating.

Then we drove about an hour up the coast to Wilmington, NC and Cape Fear. It's called Cape Fear because of the shoals nearby that caused lots of shipwrecks. At one time Wilmington was the largest cotton exchange in the world, and in 1840 it became North Carolina's largest city. There was lots of shipbuilding here as well. You can see on the map that it is a good way up the river so it's well protected.

There is a nice riverfront walk and a pretty downtown with lots of restaurants and pubs and shops. There's a branch of the University of North Carolina here.

We walked around, ate dinner at the Copper Penny (per Susie Cournoyer's suggestion) and drove through the neighborhood near downtown with beautiful old houses. These photos weren't the best houses. The best ones have trees in front so it's hard to take photos.

Some of my friends want to have the job of naming paint colors - have you noticed that most names have nothing to do with whatever the color is? Well the restaurant had a menu of craft beers - maybe if we can't get a job naming paint colors we can get a job naming beers.

This part of the country seems to be a haven for Hollywood. When we get home I will have lots of movies to watch - Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil (just finished the book), Forrest Gump, Cape Fear (the original with Robert Mitchum - he could do creepy and evil like no one else), Prince of Tides (I'm reading the book now). Other suggestions?

Odd photos of the day (besides the mini-golf):

Screen Gems has a movie studio in Wilmington. Several tv shows were filmed on location there. We had movie trucks around the corner from where we stayed once.

I believe most of the Nicholas Sparks books were set off North Carolina area. Several were made into movies. The Notebook, The Choice, Safe Haven, Dear John, The Last Song. Good sappy romance novels.
