Walking til I couldn't walk no more!

Miraflores, Lima, Peru
I arrived in Lima last night. Flights were on-time and uneventful, except when I arrived in Lima, my bag was the last one off the plane. I was about to head toward the lost luggage office, when it finally showed up. And I knew Armando was waiting outside customs wondering what happened to me, with no way to contact each other. But it all worked out.

Armando rented an apartment right in the heart of the Miraflores district, for $40 a day. Can't find a hotel for that, and this is much more convenient.

We have a little (REALLY little) kitchen so we can buy fruit and bread at the market and have breakfast here. This morning we had fresh papaya. I suppose we could do lunch and dinner, too but I'm on vacation and there are too many good restaurants around.

We spent the day walking around the neighborhood. Armando forgot that he has been walking for 2 1/2 weeks and this was my first day - at the end I was VERY tired, but no blisters!! We went shopping at the artisan markets where they sell souveniers, some cheap stupid stuff, some really nice stuff, tried to get my carry-on strap fixed that broke on the way, had yummy ceviche, chicken and russian salad (cold salad with beets, potatoes and peas) for lunch.

Parque Kennedy in the center of Miraflores should be renamed Parque de los Gatos (Cat Park). The park is crawling with cats! They are friendly, people feed them, they sleep all over the place wherever they want, they use the flowerbeds for sand boxes and if you sit on a park bench to read the paper, one might come sit by you or even crawl up in your lap.

In the evening we took a bus to the Barranco district to have dinner with daughter Virginia, her husband Ernesto and son Mateo. Anyone want to complain about how bad Memphis drivers are? Come to Lima and ride in a taxi or bus for an hour and you will think Memphis drivers are the best drivers anywhere in the world.

That bus ride, on a full sized bus, during rush hour, rushing through the streets, in and out of traffic, "merging" with others would have been a thrill ride at the fair!! Though come to think of it, they drive all over the place, seemingly without many rules, every man for himself, and yet you hardly see any accidents. So maybe they are good drivers after all. They just give those of us not used to it some hair raising moments!!
