Day 3 - Wytheville, VA to Lynchburg, VA

Sunday, May 03, 2015
Lynchburg, Virginia, United States
We drove about 2 1/2 hours through rolling hills and lots of woods with mountains in the distance. Lynchburg is built on seven hills - five of them are National Register Historic Districts.

We started by parking downtown and walking a bit, but soon found that when they said hills they meant it. These hills are at least as steep as San Francisco's! We stopped in the Lynchburg Museum in the Old Courthouse, but the main attraction here is the town itself.

While walking we walked down a staircase called "Monument Terrace". The stairs go from one street to another, in between there are several terraces, each dedicated to Lynchburg citizens who lost their lives in a different war: the Civil War, Spanish American War, WWI, WWII, Korea and Vietnam.

Each of these districts are filled with amazing Federal, Greek Revival, Gothic, Georgian and Victorian houses. Street after street after street. Even in the poorer neighborhoods where the houses are in some disrepair, the houses are still beautiful. Tobacco barons built these homes. In the late 1800s Lynchburg was one of the weathiest cities in America. We stopped in the Lynchburg Museum in the Old Courthouse, but the main attraction here is the town itself.
