A day in Dar and out of Africa

Dubai, Dubai, United Arab Emirates
Our flight to the next chapter of this journey does not leave until 4:45 p.m., so we spend the morning walking around downtown Dar es Salaam.  It has none of the Stone Town charm of narrow streets and cobblestones, but it is a vibrant metropolis by African standards.  The main street fronting our hotel is under reconstruction and is dusty and torn up, but the benefit is that no motor vehicles are allowed (a prohibition freely ignored by motor scooters).  This was especially helpful last night when we had our navigation issues.  Today, in daylight, we find our way around more easily, and walk back down by the ferry and waterfront fish markets, around what appears to be the government side of town, and through several commercial districts where we find a lunch spot before heading to the airport.
Our hotel warns us that it can take over an hour to go the 10 miles due to congestion, so we order our shuttle up for 2 p.m.  Indeed, it’s crowded, but we make it in plenty of time to spend our last Tanzanian shillings in the duty free shops inside the airport.  This is one currency we do not foresee ever needing again.  Alas, there is no Tanzanian chocolate to buy for Ed’s collection, we are told with a laugh that chocolate is not made here.  Too hot, we suppose…
On to Dubai, where the nine-hour layover until our next flight entitles us to a complimentary overnight hotel room.  “Overnight” is a euphemism, because we actually only get six hours sleep, but it’s much better than hanging around the airport.  Unfortunately, it’s the middle of the night and we do not have an opportunity to spend the nearly $100 we still have in Dubai dirhams.  Good financial planning.
