Another drive, another fortress

Cefalù, Sicily, Italy
Today dawned even nicer than yesterday, so we decided to take a short drive to a nearby mountain town to see one last mountaintop fortress.  First, Phyllis made a quick run for breakfast cereal and milk to the grocery, with a stop first at the nearby café for cappuccino.  This café, like many, charges extra (in this case, a whole Euro, $1.33) to sit outside at a table in the plaza, so she did like the locals and just stood inside to drink it.  She decided she might do this one more time and pay the extra for the experience.  It’s not that relaxing to stand in front of a pastry case gulping down your coffee!  We were on the road for a half hour drive to Caccamo, where there are more people wandering about than we’ve yet seen at any site in Sicily (it was a glorious spring afternoon), but still manageable.
This fortress was primarily built in the 14th century so is not as old as many we’ve seen.  We were able to wander inside a bit, and then returned to Cefalu for an afternoon gelato, intended to be early enough to not spoil dinner this time.  The waterfront was very crowded with people strolling, and there were even some people on the beach sunning.  However, just three slightly crazed young teens were in the water; it does not seem quite that warm yet.  We’ve seen pictures during the height of summer, and it’s hard to image the elbow-to-elbow sunbathers that can descend on this beach.  Dinner later at a pizzeria, and we commented on the walk home that this was the first full day of sunshine without evening rain, and the temperature was even still warm.  Perhaps it really is spring…  and time for us to leave.
