We had a leisurely breakfast at the RV park, then drove into the town of Wisconsin Dells. In 1905, a dam was built in the Dells, so they are divided into the Upper Dells and the Lower Dells. Boat rides leave every hour on the half hour, so we scurried to make the 12:30 tour. We barely made it onboard, but it was a fantastic tour of the Cambrian Sandstone formations. Geologists believe that the Dells are actually layers of the sea bed that were uplifted millions of years ago. Since the uplifting, no glaciers were in this area. The formations have been carved by the Wisconsin River.
At the middle of the tour, we were taken ashore by a guide for a "rest stop" and snacks if we so desired
. To reach the "rest stop", we walked on a wooden walkway that had been built through a gorge that had been opened up by waterfalls and swift moving streams. They have dubbed this gorge Witches Gully. The second shore stop was to view the famous Stand Rock. It is important to the native people of the area, but made famous by a photographer HH Bennett, who was the first to devise a shutter that would "stop action". His son leaped from Stand Rock to a nearby rock 51/2 feet away. His image was captured mid-leap.Even now, tourists can watch trained German shepherds or sometimes the boat pilots make the leap.
We enjoyed a lunch of macaroni and cheese specialty dishes at a downtown restaurants called Macs. An appropriate choice since we were in Wisconsin.

Thanks, Boyd! I think I'd rather have the weather in San Diego right now.
It is cold and foggy here in Montreal. Hoping to get a few chores done
before more sightseeing!
Best regards,
Dave
