Making a brief sojourn back into Germany, this time to see Cologne (or Koln as the Germans spell it). We had intended to visit Cologne a couple of years ago but never made it, so this year we're making the effort.
The first thing that strikes you about Cologne is that despite it being an ancient city (founded in approx 38BC), its architecture is more modern than most other old cities, probably due to the fact it was one of the most heavily bombed German cities during WWII
. There is the occasional historic building (the Cathedral for one), and old beer hall (brauhaus or pub), but for the most part the skyline largely consists of newer constructions.
Its skyline is dominated however by the Cathedral, the Kolner Dom. Situated in the heart of the city, its twin spires tower above all else. As far as cathedrals go, this one is impressive to say the least. It makes for a good navigation point as it is visible from nearly every part of the city.
Paid a visit to the archaeological museum. Not quite what we were expecting (a history of the development of the city perhaps?). It was mainly an exhibition of ancient artifacts which had been unearthed from various archaeological sites in the area, nothing really specific to Cologne itself. What it did highlight however, was just how influential the Roman Empire was. Nearly all the artifacts were to do with Roman society and customs, military campaigns and public works.
Cologne is an impressive city. Lots of different cultural sites to visit. The Rhine River. Great beer halls which serve unique local beers and great food. Highly recommended as a place to visit.
Tomorrow we're heading back to France, to Strasbourg.

I loved this city I think the twin towers were a land mark for the allies during bombing raids that is why it was never bombed
