We are on another 3 week trip with St James Rail this time to Switzerland and Austria to travel on the trains and see the snow. Our first stop Montreux via Zurich
We left Sydney at a good time of 1615hrs which meant we could have a meal and shortish sleep Since it only about 8hrs to Singapore, unfortunately a 4hr stopover since we had chosen to fly SIA A380 on both legs
.
Arriving to Montreux about 12 noon we left our luggage at the hotel and caught a little cog (rack & pinion) train to Rocher-de-Naye. This is a ski resort above Lake Leman

Lovely day and not too cold since we did not have much colder weather gear on.
An early dinner and we were in bed by 7pm.
The first full day was a morning tour of the nearby Chateaux de Chillon
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ch%C3%A2teau_de_Chillon
This was a castle started about 1150 Savoy family which continued till about 1450's then we had the Bernese period,
These days it is a tourist draw, by the time we left about noon there were about 6 tourist buses.
Nearby was the regular ferry boat to take us around Lake Leman for a couple of hours, then just for a change we hoped onto a train to Geneva for a quick look at the river. This was a short walk from the railway station past many clock shops and a Victoranix knife shop. I think it was max 6C,
Unfortunately the hotel did not have a restaurant so tonight we chose the Metropole which was about a 10 minute walk away.
A White Christmas actually a couple of days after

David, yours is the first blog I've read - I usually steer clear of all social media. It is rather good though, with the pictures. Hope you had a happy new year.

You lucky ducks! It looks so so so beautiful! You know I went to the Ecole de commerce in Neuchatel and arrived there from Africa at the same time of the year as you and it was just such a contrast and so lovely! Here we have had the most revolting hot and horrible weather! Enjoy! Of course you will!

Gorgeous pictures of the Swiss landscapes. We were in Montreux 2011 though you seemed to see better sites. We hung around the Lake Leman. Travels and taking pictures plus some diary are among the best things in life. Marco Polo would have died for things like that. Of course one must leave home first. Wai Yoong and I are hoping to follow your footsteps in a three years or so. Keep travelling and keep shooting pictures no matter what.

I wish you a happy, healthy and safe 2014. Beware of the dangers in the snow, Schumacher didn't. Don't wear a budgie smuggler or bikini when swimming in the lakes. Nice photos.

What a marvellous life you two lead. Your travel diaries are always unique and distinctive, David, and Leith's photos of your current trip are so evocative.
