Interlaken, Swiss Alps, Switzerland

After another scenic railway trip Brunig Railway

http://en .wikipedia.org/wiki/Br%C3%BCnig_railway_line

we arrived in Interlaken which means between two lakes (as assume you would
have guessed)

We stayed in a big old
hotel only about 10 min walk from the station,

The prime purpose was to
on an amazing train trip which goes to the top of Jungfraujoch 3454m

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jungfraujoch

The cog train goes up in
three stages from Interlaken with the last stage through tunnel. This last
tunnel had two 5-minute stops where you could get out walk about 60m to the
edge of the mountain and look out. We come out into a 3 storey complex complete
with shops, restaurant, ice gallery, lookout windows etc, one went walking
on 'The Tour' which Leith did in about
40mins while I rested. Please look at the link above and see the views since we
saw nothing, by the time we had reached
the third stage the cloud had come down and it was blowing a gale, however, it
was nice and cosy inside . I was a bit lightheaded but now I know what it was it
wasn’t too bad. It seemed to only affect me when I was walking. Leith did feel
a bit different than normal but not as bad as me. Owen thought it might a good
idea if all had a 3 course lunch in the highest restaurant in the world. A good
idea since if we could not see anything having lunch up made up –sort of- for
missing the view. Very good it was too. I was much better sitting down.

After about 3hrs we
returned via Grindelwald , it must be a pretty little town by this time it was
dark and raining so we did a bit of shopping for 30 mins while we waited for
the next train back. Raining quite heavily in Interlaken for the 10 min walk
back to the hotel.

Next day we spent most of
time on the train to Zermatt via Spiez and Brig. This was the old route since
these days there is a modern tunnel cuts the time down by 60 mins but of course
no good for sightseeing. It must be a shortish trip since we saw many cars on
railway low loaders with people in them, presumably waiting to go through the
tunnel.

Jungfraujoch is an engineering feast. If you can get to the top it will be great and grand beyond words. We were there in summer 2011 and the top still had plenty of snow. I guess that at 3545 m that is to be expected. Interlaken was so Swiss in 1992 when I first came there. In 2011 I even could order Kim Chi, a smelly cabbage dish loved by the Asians, originally from South Korea. Life has changed for the better ;-)

I am laughing. On our first trip up Jungfraujoch in 1983, we had the same experience - fog at the top. However, a few years later when our girls and I went alone and we travelled up, we had the clearest of skies and great views. Its such a great trip. Zermatt was always clear when we visited - a pretty town but very touristy. Shame about the weather.
