Pontresina, Swiss Alps, Switzerland
Four nights Pontresina, Hotel Saratz
Glacier Express, St Moritz, Bernina Express Tirana (Italy), Chur

To get to Pontresina we spent the whole day on the Glacier Express "Slowest Express in the world' . This runs from Zermatt to St Moritz however we alighted at Samedan about 30 mins before St Moritz.

This is a whole day affair (approx. 8 hrs) with a 3-course lunch served at your seat. Lovely sunny day so we had some superb photo opportunities. A highlight was the Lanwasser Viaduct (see photos). Another was a 6 minute changeover at Samedan luckily the train we were getting into was local so could be delayed, not by much since we I think we did it in 7 minutes. (27 people with baggage!)
Our hotel was 4 star, with a history going back 130years. It was extensively renovated in 2007 see

Pontresina is a small town at about 1800m it had about 20 cm of snow, but the paths and roads had been cleared. The hotel was about 8 min walk from the station while most people walked the hotel supplied a van for luggage and some of us who preferred a lift . As you can see from the link the hotel is 5 star, and family oriented in that it had a day minder service for smallish children so that their parents could go skiing or walking. It was great jumping off point for our 3 days of travel using it as a base.

The first day – clear and sunny - we had nothing much planned till the afternoon – we went for a swim in the hotel pool in the morning - where we did an afternoon visit to St Moritz. We walked down the main street past many expensive shops, one particular complex certainly discouraged window shopping since there was no awning over the pavement, this mean’t that if you lingered peering into a window one was frequently hit with falling snow from the roof above you.

At the end of street one could walk down to the lake which was frozen peer through some binoculars which some thoughtful person had inserted the view that one would get in the summer

Second day was a trip on the Bernina Express to Tirano

http://www .rhb.ch/Bernina-Express.2188.0.html?&L=4

This train travels to highest point in the Swiss Alps and then drops down 1230m in 17km it does this through spirals and tunnels, 13 tunnels and 52 bridges as the website says. We had morning tea at Alp Grum between trains, very scenic. We had a brief stop in Tirano (Italy so we had have euros – Switzerland has francs) just in time to get a bit to eat and then we did the trip in reverse

Third day was a half day visit to Chur the oldest village in Switzerland
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chur

We did a walking tour with guide up the main street looking at some grand buildings and ended up at the cathedral and museum both of which were fascinating.

So our lovely stay surrounded by snow covered mountains came to an end and we left Switzerland to spend 3 nights at the InterAlpine which is a luxury hotel near Seafeld Austria
