Bangkok Singapore

Bangkok, Bangkok, Thailand
As you may know originally in 2020 we were booked on the Eastern Oriental train which runs from Bangkok to Singapore. This was finally going to happen early October 2022, unfortunately about 3 months ago the train was suddenly cancelled.
Since we (St James Rail)  had the hotel rooms each end and the airfare booked four of us - originally they were about 15 booked for the train- decided to spend time in Bangkok (three days) fly to Singapore (one day) and the on to Japan to join the Kyushu and Autumn leaves trip.
So here is my thoughts on the Bangkok Singapore leg.
Since we had a 9:50am flight we again decided to stay at Rydges International which we find very convenient since we are not early risers.
After a comfortable flight we were met by the hotel car a very comfortable people mover which could accommodate the four of us plus luggage. We were staying at the Kempinski a very posh hotel, not that we made use of spa or swimming pool!
In the three full days , we did the typical(!) tourist things;
1 Boat trip on the water ways, lunch at a typical waterside cafe.
Went on a 'long tailed' boat, these have an automobile engine and a long shaft   sticking out at the rear. We had one of the smaller ones seating about 5*2 seats.   Most houses were on stilts and we went past a couple of floating markets and temples.
2 Trip to Baen Lan to catch the train to Maeklong Railway Market
Lunch at Blue Elephant
An old establishment which has been well patronised over the years, I had the best curry I have had for many years.
3 Train to old capital of Thailand Ayutthaya
Today happened to be Leith's Birthday so as there were only five of us I decided to shout the dinner for us. Well the first place - Thai Fish-  we went to didn't have any white wine in stock despite listing some on the menu! So we ended up going to a nice Japanese in the same building.
Flight to Singapore
Singapore
We only had one full day so we had an hours drive around the city where we saw the Indian and Chinese areas before going on to two interconnected cable car systems.
These were the Faber Line and the Sentosa Line. Very good views from the cable car. More information
Lunch at the Botanic Gardens and walk through the Orchid area
In the evening we went to the Zoo for a Night Safari. We had a buggy for the five of us plus a guide and trainee guide which was great fun.
Next day was a flight to Osaka to join the Kyushu trip.

A very good account on a quick visit to Thailand. This country looks very promising in Asia apart from South Kora, Taiwan, Japan and Singapore. It is amazing that you have managed to escape COVID-19 while spending a fair bit of time flying between places.

Funny that - when i finished my year's posting in Bhutan, I spent a day in Bangkok on the way back to Sydney, and like you, I did the touristy things. I was most impressed by the palaces, and the water market. Should have spent more time on the foods! It is always special to celebrate a birthday whilst you are on vacation - a belated happy birthday to Leith!! Kwan xx
