On leaving Trondheim we were supposed to get the 7:50 train to Storlien however this was cancelled and we were told to change platforms - luckily there were lifts - to a local train at 8:10 this was very crowded with locals. Luckily Norwegian Railways were able to arrange a bus so we all got off. We left Trondheim an hour late together with a dozen or so locals.
Soon after we passed the town of Hell
. Agricultural and a little cold not like how Milton depicted in Paradise Lost.
Agricultural land with forest and snow in patches..
After an hour about 20cm snow on ground and all forest. Light snow falling
Crossed into Sweden after about 70 minutes. Passed frozen lake window too dirty to take pictures.
Arrived Duved where we changed into our bus. Went into the local glass factory which happened to be right next to the station. There were two young girls making a glass beaker with a little handle. The first one we saw being made was scrapped since it cracked at the handle adding stage.
Then up to the ski area on the Bergbana Furnicular. This rises up about 160m above the town, directly to the middle of a ski run. At the top of the funicular is a hotel and a pace where we could buy a sandwich and watch the skiers come down.
We are staying at the Copperhill Mountain Lodge just out of Åre
This is a large resort above the snow line
. Built completely of wood about 4 storeys high, It is definitely up market and very stylish architecture Meals excellent.
The reason for stopping here is to spend the next morning on a 90minute dog sled through the forest and then on the frozen lake.
Each sled took three people so we had 8 sleds and was pulled by up to 8 dogs. We had about 20min through the forest then about 30 minutes on the frozen lake. The latter much smoother since the former had a number of rough patches and the sled had no springs. We returned the way we came.
After a reindeer stew and a slice of bread we rejoined our bus to go to a place called Valadalan. This is 600m above Are and is a very popular skiing and water sports area.
We walked up to our guides house typical two storey Swiss archetecture then coffee and waffles at the local pub.
Back to the Lodge arriving about 4:30pm Light snow falling
We leave tomorrow, spending all day in the train to get to Goteborg (via Stockholm) about 7pm
Our adventures there will be in the last blog.
