Today's adventure took us to Spanish Town on Virgin Gorda. This is on the other side of the island of where we spend the day on Monday, and the sail to today's fun fest was 20 nautical miles.
Since we were heading out a little earlier today, the 10 am "story time" was held at 9 am in the dining room
.
Our trip for today were a park on Virgin Gorda called "The Baths." The baths are basically giant boulders, grottoes, and caves on the island that they turned into a tourist destination because they're pretty cool. After the tender ride on to shore we boarded buses for the short drive to The Baths. The contrast between Spanish Town Marina is stunning. Opulence surrounded by absolute poverty. Since this is the BVI, the traffic pattern on this island is on par with Britain. The first turn the bus whipped around and hugged the left side of the road, I went all out American mode. Scared the hell out of me.
Once at the parking lot of the Baths we got a quick briefing and were on our way. We didn't spent too much time there. Spent about an hour on the one beach, then hiked through the caves and hit Devils Bay. The walk through the caves were a little annoying. Not so much caves but crevices that were packed with people all going different directions. It was a cool little hike but ... Been there, done that. Snorkeling at Devils Bay was nothing to travel blog about
..... uuuuuh ...... The seas were rough and I really didn't feel like getting bashed against the rocks so I literally only stayed in for about 10 minutes.
The hike back up to the parking area was long and hot. I stopped half way up to put my sandals on and The Boatingtons kept me staggering. It's amazing being on a pitching boat for a couple days, how unsteady non moving flat land can feel. Once up top we grabbed a couple waters and boarded the buses back to the marina where we transferred to the tenders back to the ship.
At 5:00 pm one of the fellow passengers sponsored an open bar for an hour. Poor guy.
... Then there was a wedding. At 5:30 2 of our fellow passengers tied the knot on the top of the ship. It was a beautiful moment. Congratulations you two .....
...... of which your names escape me ... like so many others ..... even after sever days, the name game still continues. So far I'm known as Dave, Dan, Don, Dell, DVD, Pittsburgh, and The Falling Dutchman
.
At 7:30, Captains' Dinner began.. This was alot of fun. The Captain gave a short speech, thanking the various people who contributed to make this trip an amazing success!
After dinner, we partied like rock stars and kicked it until about midnight. Heather finally got me on the dance floor which is a rarity. We started a round of Cards Against Humanity, but halfway through the pitching ship started to get to everyone and we all broke for some air. The game never resumed due to .... well, what else?..... shenanigans!!!
Everyone is realizing this trip is almost over.
One more day.
St. Barth's, and it's back to reality.
As awesome as this is, and the fact that this trip is officially the best vacation I've ever been on, there's a part of me that will be glad to get back home. Only because home is a comforting staging area for life, and as much as I don't want to admit it, I'm 47, not 27, and after a week of go go go go go ..... I'm a little tired....
Not quite yet though ..... I've still got some candle left ...
One more day .....
