On Monday morning we said goodbye to Chesham. It was a wonderful weekend with family and friends. The next stop on the tour is to Martha's Vineyard. Eric's parents and Sister Cindy and her family live there. Eric's Mom and Dad are awesome and have graciously opened up their home to all of us. They live in the center of the island and it is extremely comfortable and also perfect to host family gatherings.
Tuesday and Wednesday we spent long days at State Beach relaxing and reading our books. Most of us napped in the sun or hiding under the shade of our umbrellas. We cooked more eclectic meals in the evening to meet the needs of everyone's crazy diets. Adam and Hannah joined us most nights.
On Tuesday evening we packed a picnic dinner and Adam took us out for a sunset cruise on his boat. The weather was amazing, warm and still. A perfect night to be on the water. It was fun to see the island from the sea. Mother nature did not disappoint and flaunted a beautiful sunset.
On Thursday we all piled in our mini van and toured around the island.
We had a long list of ideas of places to go and see but only made it to about half of them. It takes a while to navigate the winding roads through the traffic. We spent some time in oak bluffs at the cottages. Attempted Aquinnah but could not find a parking spot. We ate lunch in Menemsha and found a sculpture garden on our way home.
The cottages at Oak Bluffs is a community of 318 small homes. In 1835, a half-acre of rural land bordering a sheep pasture was
selected as a place to hold a small Methodist camp meeting. By 1859,
what was then called Wesleyan Grove had expanded to become one of
largest permanent camp meeting sites in America. By the 1860s and 1870s, as the camp became a more permanent, year-round
establishment, the tents were replaced with small cottages, most of
which display the whimsical Carpenter Gothic style that was popular at
the time. The cottages community now occupies 34 acres.
Thursday evening we went to Cindy and Adam's for dinner. Unfortunately Cindy and our nephew Henry were in Lake Placid this week. They are attending hockey camp. Adam did a great job grilling dinner. Neighbors Susan and Bruce joined us as well. It was another loud, fun family dinner with lots of wine.
Friday was a relax day. We did laundry, played games, ate all our leftovers and relaxed for one last day with the family. Saturday we are on the move again. Off to Boston to meet up with more friends and learn some Revolutionary history.
Thanks Mom, Dad, Adam and Hannah for hosting us on your island. We had a blast.
