Exploring Boston

Boston, Massachusetts, United States
We left Martha's Vineyard bright and early Saturday morning.  It is quite hard to get a ferry reservation with a car in the summer.  Even though I purchased our tickets the day they went on sale, the only spot i could get was at 8:15am.  It was a beautiful, calm morning and it was nice to sit outside on the deck.
Our first stop when we arrived on the mainland was a quick 20 minute drive up the road.  We met up with our friend Dave and his daughter Marcel at a farm in Falmouth for breakfast.  Breakfast was delicious and it was great to catch up with Dave.
We arrived in Boston around 1pm and checked in.  We rested for a bit before we took the T across the harbor, actually under the harbor to Quincy Market.  The market was full of people, street performers and great smells wafting from all the restaurants.  We found an Asian restaurant with outdoor seating and dined while enjoying a show put on by Wacky Chad.
After dinner we found a corner pub to watch the Red Sox game.  We hung out for the first few innings and then decided to head back to the hotel to meet up with Terry and Becca.   Terry drove up from PA to join us for a few days and Becca flew in from Co to finish the trip with us.  We hung out at the hotel bar for a while and watched the end of the game.  Aside from the Red Sox losing it was a fun day.
On Sunday we met our friend Clare, who happened to be in town for a couple days, for Brunch.  We took the water taxi across the harbor.  This is my new favorite way to travel.  We did a bunch of research on where to go and ended up at this wonderful, kitschy restaurant called The Friendly Toast.  I highly recommend visiting this place while in Boston.  Good food, fun drinks, great service and amazing atmosphere.
We spent Sunday and Monday wondering the streets of Boston, loosely following The Freedom Trail.  The history here is amazing.  We learned about The Revolutionary War, The Tea Party, The Declaration of Independence, The Boston Massacre and much more.  Boston has the frist public school, the first subway, the first public park, the first US state capitol, held the first Sunday School and many, many more firsts.    Before we left home I printed up a self guided walking tour for the area.  We walked, Eric read the history to us and occasionally we would duck into a pub or restaurant to eat, drink and cool down.
It was hot on Saturday.  Becca and Eric and I split from the group in the afternoon to seek refuge in our hotel.  Eric ran to the store for bubbles and snacks. We cranked the air, listened to music and played cards for a few hours while the others braved the heat and walked the streets a little longer.  On Saturday night everyone wanted something different for dinner.  Eric, Becca and I wanted a fancy seafood feast so we went to The Seaport District and found a great open air spot with an amazing view and pigged out.
On Monday afternoon we said goodby to Terry and Bart.  Terry was headed to Maine and Bart back to Florida.  In the evening the remaining five of us went to Fenway Park to watch the Red Sox.  Becca was so excited she could barely contain herself.  Our seats were decent, the weather was great, The sunset was amazing and The Sox won.  Hooray.
Tuesday morning we slept in a bit, relaxed, picked up a new rental car to head North for the next adventure.  Goodby Boston.  We had a blast.

I love Boston and lived there in 1973 – 1975 – Lexington, to be exact. Your photos, Deb, are extraordinary and bring back many wonderful memories! I'm sure my two very good friends who live in Acton and Wellesley are DELIGHTED with the Red Sox win! Keep on keeping on!
