Warsaw, Masovian Voivodeship, Poland
We had a late start, largely because Rosemary is occupying the living area and so she can control what time we get up! Today was destined to be a sightseeing day and we elected to spend it in out of town in the former palace of one of Poland’s most famous kings, one Jan III Sobieski. Jan was born of noble or at least influential, parentage but it was his prowess on the battlefield that eventually elevated him to supreme leader ie king. The palace at Wilanów, known as the Polish Versailles was first conceived and built on Jan’s order in 1676 and it was originally known as Villa Nova but in time the name was morphed to Wilanów (substitute a ‘v’ for a ‘w’ and you’re there). Here is another url
We caught the 116 bus out to the terminus at Wilanów and alighted around 11:00 and immediately felt the need for coffee and fortunately for us there was a McDonalds right there which served its’ purpose admirably. The palace or country house, depending upon how grand you are, is a few hundred yards from McDonalds and having purchased our tickets we were soon doing the tour with our audio guides. On the top floor there was a collection of Chinese art and weaponry but the main museum is dedicated to the items amassed and collected by the numerous people who have had the privilege of owning this place. We enjoyed the tour but in truth nothing of real note stood out but here is a URL that describes the place
We had a late lunch in a nearby café as there was nowhere to eat in the museum itself, they’re missing a trick, I reckon. Julie & Rosemary had enormous slices of cake each and I had an equally generous portion of a filled panini. It was now around 14:45 and we figured we could get back into town and ‘do’ a bit of the National Museum as it was free entry today. However, by the time we got there and realized that it wasn’t free and that it wasn’t worth spending the money just for an hour, we decided instead to have a refreshing iced tea – delicious and then did a bit of shopping as we’d decided to have an evening in. Eating out for every meal gets a bit stressful, somehow, that is one of the reasons why we opted for an apartment wherever possible.
