Over to Öland

Borgholm, Öland, Sweden
Even though the forecast was for unfavourable, northerly winds, we nevertheless decided that it was time to move on and we had the engine on and were away by 09:00, destination Borgholm on the island of Öland, 25 miles away. It was warm, bright and sunny and with little wind but this soon changed to a fresh F3/4 from the NNE. As we only had a shortish distance to go and all day to do it in and as Jeff & Greta would like to sail (after all that's why they’ve come!) we decided to beat our way northwards, enjoying the sailing and not worrying about poor progress to our destination. We continued in this vein until 13:15 and then dropped the sails and motored for an hour into the almost deserted harbour on Borgholm.

Borgholm’s harbour is dominated by a large hotel complex and the staff were doubling as harbourmasters as it was in the reception that we checked in . It is amazingly good value, it only costs 150SEK for the night, including free showers and electricity and, the use of the hotel’s 33m swimming pool! Rather than explore the town then, as it was such a warm afternoon, we decided to have a swim and then laze around in the back of the boat and enjoy the sun. The weather was so nice that it woke up the barbecue spirit in me and barbecued chicken and salad was placed on the menu that night. Very nice too and an excellent way to end a very pleasant day.
