Back to Sweden

Fejan, Stockholm, Sweden
Again we had a good night, despite the heavy rain. The good thing was that the rain had come earlier than predicted so it had more or less petered out by the morning, leaving a grey, overcast cool day. However, the wind was now not blowing from the normal Southerly quadrants, rather it was an easterly breeze, ideal for making the crossing back to Sweden, so with the decision made, we were off and sailing by 10:00, destination an anchorage somewhere in the Swedish archipelago, some 36 miles away.

Initially the wind was plenty gutsy enough to drive us along but sadly as the day progressed it began to falter and at 14:30, when our speed was down to less than 4 knots, we gave in and started the engine . We'd decided to make for the bay opposite the harbour we’d stayed in 2 weeks ago, on Fejan. I’d spotted a couple of boats anchored there when we left and filed it away as a possible anchorage. We arrived there at 17:00 and dropped the anchor in a likely spot, unusually in deep water (11metres) but having paid out 35 metres of chain, the thing wouldn’t grip so we had to wind it all back in again, find another spot and try again. Now this is not your average bay, there are rocks above the surface dotted about and some others just below, so we proceeded with some caution to another likely spot and this time, the anchor held, in 7 metres of water with sufficient room to swing, just. There was one power boat nose to the rocks nearby and two other vessels half a mile away across the bay, so it was pretty secluded, a nice spot. We watched the clouds developing interesting patterns in the evening sky, saw an eagle flying over and a family of Mute Swans nearby, in short a lovely spot and a nice welcome back to Sweden. We’d really liked our interlude in the Åland islands and the Finnish Archipelago, we left knowing that we would be coming back and already looking forward to it.
