A Grey Day

Östra Eknö, Kalmar, Sweden
I think as I get older my system can't take the amount of hot spices that it used to and my pizza was liberally provided with hot green chillis, resulting in my needing some Gaviscon in the middle of the night – that’ll teach me! Anyway, come the dawn it was a bright start but clouds were gathering and indeed that was the formula for the day, mostly cloudy but the sun came out again at the end of the day.

After Julie shopped and I blogged, we put some fuel into the boat and were off soon after 11:00, destination an anchorage offa small island off an island called, intriguingly, Ö Eknö, some 23 miles southwards . Actually, we later found that it was really called Östra Eknö There was a reasonable wind blowing, F3-4 from the SE and later the South so we were able to sail. Initially, as we were leaving the wide bay with Loftahammar at its’ head, it was pretty much on the nose but we elected to sail which necessitated umpteen tacks and this we persisted in until Julie got tired and then we motored a while until our heading changed and we could sail more effortlessly.

The anchorage I’d selected is not in any pilot book but it looked very promising, at the head of a boomerang-shaped island, thus affording shelter from all winds from the southern sectors. The only issue with selecting a non-recommended anchorage is that there may be uncharted rocks lurking so it was with slight trepidation that we approached the location around 16:00. We saw that there was one other intrepid couple there, rock-huggers so we had the whole bay to ourselves and we anchored in 8 metres of water. The anchor held but only after a bit of drift but I deemed it secure enough and we settled down for the evening, which consisted of a barbecue and the 'AB Fab’ Olympic episode that I’d downloaded. Much later, our neighbours uprooted themselves and moved to the opposite side of the bay, saying that they’d heard that the wind was going to veer to the west and increase in force but our anchorage still offered protection so we were fine.
