Sailing can be a SLOW business

Kalmar, Småland and Blekinge, Sweden
We'd decided to set off relatively early for Kalmar as the forecasters this time all agreed that the wind would be from the south west and that it would be stronger in the afternoon, so we were off in a miniature convoy by 09:15, which is very early for the Smiths! They wanted us to take some photos of Odile under sail, to which of course we obliged and they kindly reciprocated, one photo of each boat duly presented here.

Andy quickly made the decision that sailing would not be an option for him so he set off motor-sailing . We, being made of sterner stuff, decided to sail –actually for sterner stuff read more naiive as after one hour’s sailing effort in the F4 winds we were precisely 1.3 miles further south ie towards Kalmar. So we used the engine with a full main and the stay’sl and in this way we were making 4 miles or so southwards in every hour, arriving a good hour after Odile and switching the engine off at 14:15. We were about 16 miles to the good but had actually travelled 22, due to all the tacking.

There is not much to relate about the rest of the day, we did a spot of shopping, joined the Smiths for aperitifs and were regaled by a cracking story of Andy’s adventures in Majorca (ask him to tell you should you meet him) and later, we had Mamma’s meatballs (recommended Swedish brand) and they were really rather good.
