Regensburg

Regensburg, Bavaria, Germany
It really has been a nonstop trip,

I'm not even sure what day it is, we have flown through Belgium, Luxemburg, and we are in Germany, but are just stopping at 3 places, so it’s the autobahn all the way really

We stopped at Regensburg, no real reason, it was just to break the trip up a bit I think and it’s an interesting town

There is a bridge and a cathedral here and it has a legend or fairy story attached to it

There was an apprentice and his master (I have no idea what the apprentice was or the master, but they must have been builders)

The apprentice got a bit cocky and made a wager with his master, the wager was, he would finish the bridge before the master finished the cathedral, of course the master accepted

As things went the cathedral was being built faster than the bridge, so the apprentice made a deal with the devil, he would finish the bridge first if the devil could have the souls of the first 3 across the bridge,

The apprentice thought this was a bargain, so the bridge was duly finished in record time

The master was dismayed at this and climbed to the top of the cathedral and threw himself off to his doom

The devil appeared for his payment, the apprentice sent across a dog and 2 chickens, the devil was enraged at this and struck the bridge with a bolt of lightning and it put a kink in the bridge, but never tore it down

Well that is the legend anyway, it’s quite a good tale I think

Now on about Regensburg, it has the oldest recorded Wurst (sausage) kitchen in Germany, so it was worth a visit

It didn’t look that old, but it has been rebuilt on the original site,

You can get a range of wurst here, 6, 8, or 10, served up on a bed of sauerkraut, (I just had 6 and a beer)

Considering the size of the place it’s really busy with long queues for tables, it was worth the wait, they were very good

Regensburg was home to both a Messerschmitt Bf 109 aircraft factory and an oil refinery, which were bombed by the Allies on August 17, 1943, by the Schweinfurt-Regensburg mission and on February 5, 1945, during the Oil Campaign of World War II .

Although both targets were badly damaged, Regensburg itself suffered little damage from the Allied strategic bombing campaign, and the nearly intact medieval city centre is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The city's most important cultural loss was that of the Romanesque church of Obermünster which was destroyed in a March 1945 air raid and was not rebuilt (the belfry survived).

Also, Regensburg's slow economic recovery after the war ensured that historic buildings were not torn down, to be replaced by newer ones, but there is a lot of work being done all over and more so on the cathedral going by all the scaffolding there and on the bridge

After our lightning visit and walk round, we are off to Prague next (a place I have been to twice and each time it’s been freezing)

I hope its warmer this time
