Yes, I have been busy for the past few days – I am after all keeping company with a tourism professional, and I am being given the complete guided tour experience, which is multi-layered, and as a consequence of its depth, time-consuming.
So – after a delightful beach day at the start of the week, I had two academic days – I accompanied Rod into the "Uni", which is Southern Cross University in Lismore
. SCU is located in sub-tropical New South Wales, which means the campus is palm-tree and jungle foliage studded, and has all kinds of tropical birds singing you a greeting when you walk around campus. Haven't seen the campus Koala bear yet, though.
Monday I worked on catching up on my email and my summer online course, and Monday afternoon we went shopping at Woolworth’s (which in Australia is like a King Sooper’s) - the grocery store. We bought fruit, veggies, and prawns for dinner, and headed home about 5 pm. Shortly after pulling into the drive, a visitor arrived, and Rita who was a colleague from a neighboring village, asked Rod if she could have his advice.
We had a lovely evening together – Rita was president of the Ballina Historical Society, and had a wall “interpretation” project she was challenged with, and so she picked Rod’s brain as to how to go about completing the wall (leave it mostly the same? Come up with an entirely new theme? What would the town council think?)
The conversation was very tourism related but with lots of storytelling about people and projects in the past, and it was a wonderful evening having an interesting conversation about local events. What has been so meaningful on this particular getaway is being with locals who are so open and enthusiastic about sharing their wonderful lives in Australia with me.
I am including photos of places around Lismore we have visited. More soon.
