Back to Byron Beach

Byron Bay, New South Wales, Australia
Thursday we returned again to Byron Bay, because it was Farmers Market day in this cute little beach community. Even though it was overcast, the weather was mild and we had fun wandering through the stalls and deciding what to eat for dinner. We bought broccoli, leeks, a spinach and feta cheese tart, and a blueberry muffin (I am falling in love with the baked goods here), and then found some fresh salmon, cream cheese and chives ravioli prepared by one of the best Italian chefs in eastern Australia, so naturally we had to get some of that.

Good start - we were set for snacks and dinner - now off to explore the town and walk on the beach . I have included some photos of restaurants in Byron, and streetscapes. When you cross the last street and you are headed for the beach, you find yourself in a grassy green park, that serves as a common area for people to gather and picnic, watch the waves, gaze at the stars, or whatever - this is one of the things I really like about Australian beach zoning - there is always a park in front of access to the beach.

It was a little chilly to plunge into the waves, so we went for a long stroll instead - yes, we walked almost the whole length of this large bay. At the southern end we came back to the path that leads into town, and we picked up a dozen raw oysters. Cool thing to do in Byron (Tip #5) - buy oysters and a bottle of Chardonnay and head up to the lighthouse, and have an oyster picnic while you watch for whales heading to warmer northern waters. As you can see from the photos, we were having a great time picnicing, drinking, and Yes, we did see whale spouts far out into the sea - it was a terrific beach day topped off with a farmers market meal, and plenty of Australian wine. Yes, it is going to be hard to leave - this vacation has really let me play tourist to my heart's content, and with a native Australian guide to interpret!
