Last Days

We visit Borrodale Croft. It's lambing time. A wee orphan lambkin is in good hands with Jane. A surrogate mum will be found for it. Jane names it Rosie!

Sam's land is extensive and diverse . We tramp one of the most breathtakingly beautiful sections. We start our walk to Waterstein Head on the moorland at Borrodale Croft.

It is a glorious day. In the distance the 'grass is greener' and the white specks are Sam's sheep!

Waterstein Head is one of Skye's most stunning cliffs. Sam' sheep graze on its very edge and sometimes below the edge! The turf of the hill is full of rabbit holes - and the rabbits scamper immediately they spot us. A huge eagle soars overhead - it's movements seemingly effortless.

Col the dog scampers hither and yon.

There is a new shepherdess on Skye! I chat with Sam as we wend our way up. He is a religious man and I have enjoyed the discussions that have ensued after the sermon each Sunday. I ask him if he has a special quote from the Bible. His response is immediate - and it has to do with travellers:"Abide with us for it is toward evening and the day is far spent."(Luke Ch 24 Verse 29)

From the top of Waterstein Head the views are truly magnificent with Neist Point and the lighthouse (Jane's domain) below.

Beyond lie the Western Isles.

To the north the cliffs are jagged and huge.

To the south lies the sweep of Moonen Bay.

Further south Loch Mor nestles against the hillside. It contains eels - won't be fishing there!

We need to complete the fishing saga. We have tried the ocean, the Hamara river mouth - and now we try an inland Loch on Borrodale Croft.

We fish and fish and finally confirm what we have suspected all along! There are no fish on Skye!

But we do find peat that is still cut by hand, in traditional manner, and laid out to dry for the next winter.

We enjoy a delightful 'last supper' with Jane and Sam. The sun sets in spectacular fashion.

And the gate of 6 Fasach is opened and closed by us for the last time!
