Ferry to Milos

Milos, Cyclades, Greece

Kara laughed at me when I said I was behind on my blogging because I hadn't done this day yet ...and now it is the day after - because I slept so much.

We had to be ready at 7 am for our transfer to the port for the ferry to Milos. But a young man knocked on our door before 7. Luckily we were almost ready. We got dropped off and made our way to the dock. I tried to get Kara to go into the building that said departures but she wasn't ready yet. After they started to let people out of the building to go to the boat, we got into the line. We left my bag in the baggage rack and then found out assigned seats. Of course, someone was sitting in them. This seems to happen a lot here - not always to us - but around us too. So we got our seats and then broke out our left over pizza and other breakfast food. I said Candae would be proud of us, eating pizza for breakfast.

Sometime soon after eating, I fell asleep. I might have awakened once or twice. I remember the first island stop on the way . Then all of a sudden I woke up and saw some big sailboats in a harbor. My first thought was to take a photo. While I was getting out a camera, I heard the announcement for all passengers disembarking in Milos to head for the exit, so my next thought was to take my photo so I could get going.

We managed to get off with my bag but that took ages. If we had known that our seats were up front and bags were stashed half way, we wouldn't have left my bag so far away so that we had to stand in the long line to get there when other people were leaving by the middle exits . Once off the boat, we spotted the tourist office and went in, got a map, and directions to our hotel. The woman said it was a 3 minute walk. I was till looking when Kara asked if that was our hotel and there it was. It is amazingly near to the port and everything else we would need here....I think. There were a whole bunch of outdoor restaurants on the way to the hotel and one in front of it.

We got the key to our room. I asked whether we could have twin beds. We could have switched with a couple who wanted a double bed but when we saw the view from the balcony we opted to stay in our original room. Our room has its own back balcony away from the harbor and then shares the balcony in front of our room with the other rooms on the second floor. It is a stunning view and there are umbrellas, chairs and even a hammock. We should go out there more but I can't seem to see the computer screen outside because of glare. Kara is now looking at the map to see where we should go when we have a car .

After getting to our room around noon, we took a short nap. Then we went out for lunch. We tried the Cretan dakos* salad which was OK but the big chunk of bread was kind of hard to cut. We had cheese pies like empanadas, only hollow. Then we had an eggplant dish - it was a lot to eat so we had the rest of our salad wrapped to go. After lunch, I needed to nap probably and then we walked down the harbor to the beach where Kara swam. I sat in one of the free lounges under an umbrella and we ordered a big bottle of sparkling water. No other obligation.

After we came back, I had another nap. When I woke up, I said to Kara that I wasn't really hungry and she said she wasn't either so we went to bed for the night.   Another busy day of traveling in the Cyclades.
