Catacombs and Beaches

Milos, Cyclades, Greece
I had a horrible night because there was a mosquito buzzing in my ear . Then Kara killed it, but another one came out and I couldn't sleep thinking about it. We realized later that we had unplugged the mosquito repellent to charge our electronics.
We had another excellent breakfast trying to fill in the items that we missed the day before. I tried a different vegetable pie and the lemon tart. We thought about getting some fruit for lunch but forgot in the end. The orange juice is just so wonderful. We were later today and the breakfast room was packed. We thought about eating outside but I didn't find the right tables so we ended up inside.
We got to the car rental place just about 10 am and picked up our little Suzuki Alto with manual transmission. It had plenty of scratches and dents that the rental lady found. Kara set off at a fast pace but had to slow down as we hit the narrow streets with cars parked jutting out into the street. Soon we were on the highway out of Adamas going toward Tripiti and Klima. We went first to Tripiti and parked, then walked to the catacombs and to the amphitheater. We passed a sign for the Venus di Milo but I still don't know quite where she was found. Here she is called Aphrodite, so it seems strange that she would referred to as Venus di Milo. The catacombs were interesting but dark....of course. The amphitheater was not as spectacular as some others I have seen but still it was fun to see Tripiti and the old churches and other buildings . We disagreed about how to get to Klima where the old fishermans' houses were painted bright colors, but Kara's argument that we would lose time if we were to walk the 1 km there won out. We decided to drive there instead. Our first try landed us on a dead end on a hilltop above the port village but then we looked at the map and worked out the route. I took some photos but the road itself was much scarier than what the photos showed. Most of these roads only take one car at a time unless you find a place that widens where two cars can pass. We were lucky when we left Tripiti that no other cars came out way.
Klima lived up to the expectations because it was very picturesque with the brightly colored houses where fishermen used to live and keep their boats moored in :garages: on the houses'' first floors. There was a whole bunch of kayakers in the harbor paddling from one side to the other. We thought about having a snack or coffee at the harborside cafe but couldn't make out the menu so we left to pursue our next destinations - the beaches . We had several picked out.
First we headed out to Pollonia. The road out there is a major paved road. Pollonia is the second largest city/town on Milos. We found a free parking lot next to the beach. We expected umbrellas with bars but there were bars and no umbrellas really. What there was that was quite interesting was the mob of old ladies in their two-piece bathing suits. They went for a swim or bobbed around. One had a crow like raspy voice and they all talked nonstop I think too. It was interesting to contrast this beach with the black-sand beach on Santorini. It is much quieteter here and a lot fewer young people although there were some.
The next beach we tried was Papafragas Beach. This was a Kara pick because she had read that it was very scenic. That it was with deep cliffs, arches and caves but we couldn't find any easy way down to it so we gave up as did several other people wandering around there with us . At that point we decided to go to the Poliochori Beach that I had eaid was the most populular or the best beach on Milos. We drove to the southern shore of Milos for this. On the way we passed more farms with olive groves, some goats, a windmill ruin and more fields than we had seen up north. I even saw some horses in a field. When we got to the beach area, we had to park on the road outside the beach along with lots of other cars. Kara did an excellent job of parking parallel on the opposite side of the road. We went to a restaurant and tried to get espressos with ice cream. We had to make our own with a dish of ice cream and two cold espressos. Kara had to go to the bar to order them after she had gotten some menus. I had trouble finishing mine because there was so much ice in the glass that the ice cream was left with the ice cubes after I drank all the coffee. After this refreshment, we went to th4e beach and sat down. Kara went into the water - I passed at this one although I did swim at Pollonia - along with the other old ladies . Well, I swam by myself while they were in the water at the other end of the beach.
We stayed until after 5 pm and then drove back to the hotel. Kara did an excellent job of driving under very difficult conditions. We sorted our stuff, I showered, then we went off for dinner. Neither of us very excited about dinner at this point but we did manage to find some new things to try. I stuck with fried squid - the waiter said people don't usually have it grilled. Kara tried a dish with potatoes, cheese and spinach that was very good. She also had a pea and artichoke dish that was tasty. We split another half liter of white wine. Each day it is different. I took home my left over squid....for lunch tomorrow.
We discussed plans for tomorrow - whether we should try to drive to another scenic beach since we have the car until 10 am. The only other things we have to do is have breakfast, get stamps for my postcards, return the car, pack, check-out and get our ferry at 12:10 PM. Should be doable, I hope. Now I need to get to bed so I can get up early tomorrow.
