Quick Trip to Beach and Ferry to Piraeus

Piraeus, Attica, Greece

I woke up at 6:55 am this morning and Kara complimented me on my internal time clock . We got to breakfast by 7:35 because we were on a mission to squeeze in one last beach before we gave up the rental car. Faced with all those wonderful breakfast choices, I took too much and was sated long before I could finish everything: yogurt, OJ, coffee, several kinds of Greek pies. Kara shared some of her spinach pie and I wrapped up 3 pieces of different pies and a hard roll so we could leave. It was 8:10 am when we left for the car.

The drive out to this moonscape beach was fairly short. Kara picked the slightly longer route and I planned to go back the other way but it didn't happen because Kara mistook left turn for right. We parked on the top of the cliff and walked down the path made by thousands if not millions of feet to the rocky promontory as it dipped in to a little cove. There were hardly any people when we got there but at least 4 times as many when we left. As we were walking down, Kara saw a girl jump off the opposite cliff into the water . We walked around - taking photos of the caves, the various rock formations, the coastline, the vegetation....all alien looking....sort of. It was a pretty scenic beach and we wished we had more time. The little cove had a nice swimming area and there were already people in it when we were leaving. Kara did manage to make friends with the resident cat - a poor thing with a damaged nose.

We stopped at the gas station on the way into Adamas and got 4 liters of gas. It seemed that a gallon would refill the "one nugget" that Kara reported we had used. No movement on the gas gauge. We drove around a few blocks and at first the gauge even went down more. Kara was embarrassed to go back to the same station for more gas but there didn't appear to be another station close by so we got an additional 5 liters of gas and that brought it up sufficiently. We returned the car with no problems. They seem pretty relaxed here but they did check for dents and gas level . From there we tried a souvenir shop for stamps but he only sold them for his own cards. We were directed to some shops 100 meters down the main street. The bookshop was closed and the other shop only had one stamp but would have more at 11 am. At this point we walked back to our hotel to find that check-out was 12. Our ferry leaves at 12:10 pm.

So now we have a little chill time until it is time to get the stamps.

I bought my stamps and put them on the postcards at the table under an umbrella outside on the balcony overlooking Milos harbor - one of the few times I took advantage of the beautiful view.....except for taking photos. We then checked out & mailed the postcards from a box across from the bus station. I guess we got to the ferry building too early because we had to wait for 45 minutes before we could board the ferry. I stashed my green bag in the luggage shelves in the hold and we walked upstairs to our assigned seats in the middle of the seating area . The boat had a lot of empty seats but they seemed to fill up more after we stopped at least two more times. I would have liked a window seat for my seasickness but there were none. Instead I watched the TV above our heads for a bit and then went to sleep. Since it was a pretty big ferry and would take over 4 hr to Piraeus, I took a chance and didn't take the dramamine that knocks me out - just the new bands. I was still sleepy but I think I am reviving now.

When the boat docked, the downstairs luggage area was chaotic but I saw my bag and was able to retrieve it fairly easily. We made our way slowly until we got to the ramp and then movement sped up a bit. We walked past a ship sitting sideways in the water and a Blue Star ferry where we had caught ours a few days ago. In order to find our hotel, we needed a map or something. A ferry ticketing office was nearby and Kara sent me in for a map of Piraeus. I didn't find one but two of their clerks were very nice and looked up the hotel on their computers . One of them printed out a little map and explained how to walk there. We managed it with just a little disagreement on how far to walk before we turned up the hill. It was farther than I would have thought from the tourist agency where we booked it.

A nice young woman checked us in and told us we could get some coffee, OJ and maybe toast tomorrow am. We decided to get our cab for 4:30 am for the 6:30 flight. Kara sort of got on the internet and I seem to be doing OK at the moment but it seems to go in and out. This is a basic hotel but fine for our needs tonight....a short night at that. Kara is winning at spider solitaire on her phone yet again....she is on a winning streak!.

After a period of chilling out in our room and trying the internet, I began to feel a bit hungry. We have eaten so well and so much that I was thinking I could probably do without another meal but it would be our last in Greece so we went out to see what we could find . At first our luck was looking not good at all. Next to our hotel were some other hotels but they seemed only to have bars and cafes, or what Kara termed girly bars. We walked down to the main street along the waterfront and saw a few more bars and cafes, with some gyro places that could fill the bill depending on how desperate we were. We walked to the street leading to the port but that didn't look promising. We walked around a very big Greek Orthodox church that I made Kara take photos of. Then we headed back uphill, explored a pedestrian street, found some outdoor restaurants that were again - drinks but no food. One waiter told us that the next street over had food so we plodded on.

By now we were getting tired of the quest. We walked up and down this street. A waiter came out of one place and Kara was willing to try it, but I couldn't see the menu clearly and didn't want to commit myself so I made Kara walk down the rest of the street and back we came to that very place . The other places didn't look that promising. So then when I saw the menu was tapas (I think they called it tapas instead of the Greek version of meze) was sorry I tortured Kara by pressing on, because it was very promising. Of course, at first we looked at the menu and really couldn't tell what the dishes were because the menu was in Greek. I was all set to try to work out the alphabet and sound out the words and see if I could decipher any of it but Kara got the waiter's attention and he brought us menus in English. We asked if we could pass for Greeks and he said, not locals, maybe from the islands, like Santorini!   We ordered a half carafe of the house white wine, a green salad with pine cones (pine nuts to us), a cold fava bean dish with olives and caramelized onions, and a hot mushroom dish. Everything was wonderful and we had a lovely meal.

We managed to find our way back to our hotel for an early night since our wake up call would be at 4 am. After turning off the lights, I sat up and asked Kara to set her phone alarm as a back-up.
