Greek Antiquities: Part III - Kerameiko Cemetery

Athens, Attica, Greece

Here at Kerameiko Cemetery, we saw more busts and lots of sculptured monuments in the Museum
building . We saw the Church of the Holy Trinity with its damaged
frescoes. We took photos of them. We walked around and tried to see
what else there was - some house sites, a gate, a fountain, We walked
along the Road of Tombs but there are not so many still along the road.
I may be partial to cemeteries but I felt that Kerameiko had more
ambiance than the Agora. What a terrible thing to say. I think it must
be the opinion of an uninformed person. Maybe my excuse can be that it
is all so overwhelming and, since the majority of structures are in
ruins (as picturesque as they may be), it is hard to visualize and
comprehend without taking a lot more time than we did. Maybe it was
jetlag that prevented my full enjoyment and appreciation. I was more
dazed than awed unfortunately. We were more taken with a whole bunch of
tortoises that were wandering around the site. But even without the
comprehension and appreciation of the Classical Greek ruins themselves, I
felt that Athens was a magical place: the brightness (sky, white
buildings), the fragrance of herbs in the air, the gray-green of the
olive trees and other vegetation in the dry dusty landscape and the
pointy cypress trees with the broken columns mimicking them . The stray
cats.

Once we were finished here, we were dragging a bit. I
had been thirsty all day. So much so that I paid 9 euros for two
bottles of lemon iced tea. We headed back toward the hotel by going
past the restaurant where we ate along Monastiraki street - a major
shopping and dining area. We had a bit of confusion about how to get
back and had to get out the map more than once but we lucked out since
we had already been in Plaka the other night. I found something I
wanted to buy and Kara went back to a store where she had found
something she liked. I also bought 10 postcards. I had used up all of
my cash and only had some change left so I will have to buy postcard
stamps later. Something to remember: stores will sell stamps with
postcards you buy from them, but not if you don't buy their postcards.

We
did find our way back to our hotel street and landed across from the
Temple of Zeus. The tall columns are a very useful landmark . I bought
two more bottles of water on the way. Once we got back to our room, we
noticed how tired we were....and how not hungry we were. So we took
showers to get off the sweat and grit and then Kara fixed us dinner with
our leftover snacks from home and two rolls from our flight. All
good. Now I have to take care of the dish washing.

I still need
to try to upload the Lumix photos....which I had problems with
yesterday. We'll see. Kara is already asleep. It may not be that long
before I follow. She put on English-speaking TV so I am half listening
to it.
